Help with a crazy neighbor

Ok so here I am, asking you all to give me your thoughts and opinions please!
Ok so here it is , my neighbors have been harrassing my Kids and family and their friends for at least a year or so, and now it is getting so bad that if my kids are outside the man next door is swearing at them, calling them names and NOW TRYING TO HIT THEM WITH HIS CAR!!! You can not talk to this man he just yells and swears at you and has NO reasoning. His Son will come over and does the same thing.. to 10 and 11 yrs and older.. its crazy.. he even swears at my husband and threatens him as well.
Ok .. so here is my Q.. I figured that maybe i could try to talk to his wife about it, and see if she could end the problems by talking to her husband and tell him to stop doing this stuff to the kids etc>> BUT OMG she went NUTS and was yelling and screaming at me , and tried to hit me.. so Iput my hand out to block her and she started to BITE my hand, and pulled my shirt and pulled me inside, therefore I had no choice but to hit and smack her in the head and pull her hair etc what ever i could think of to get her to let go and stop biting me., It aint easy to get someone to stop biting you like as a DOG OMG, my hand was bleeding everywhere and i was trying to just get her to release her teeth from my hand ya know.. WELLLLL... she called the police and I was taken by the cops ( who never read me my rights by the way, he only told me that i had to go to town with him and sign some papers and I would be able to come home)... well that did not happen, i was put in a holding cell for 18hrs??? and I am now being charged with assault a misdemeanor in the first degree.. I have NEVER HAD ANY TROUBLES BEFORE AND HAVE NOTHING ON MY RECORD! i DID NOT GO THERE TO HURT HER AND DID NOT THINK SHE WOULD HURT ME EITHER?
my Q is this, if you have kids and they are always being threatened and the cops tell you that nothing can be done til he actaully hits one of them or runs them over??? what would you do.. try to resolve it by asking a person you think may be sane over there to have them stop? I did.. I love my kids and family and would do anything to help and protect them thats me thats what I do ya.. I am not like a person who is violent and dont think people should fight ya know.. but sometimes things dont go right and you must do what you have to .
If you are a family memeber or friend, you know I would ALWAYS be the one to help if I could?
Now I am just so stressed and dont know what is going on?

First of all, are your kids staying in their own yard or are they constantly in the neighbor's yard?

Secondly, ten and eleven year old kids are not innocent little angels. At this age they already know how to lie, sneak and manipulate. Question: How could the neighbor run them over with his car if your kids are in their own yard where they belong?

Points to consider: Why haven't you made police reports? Why hasn't your husband taken the initiative?

I suggest that you put a fence around your property and stay on your own side, otherwise you really don't want to solve the problem.
