Green light in the sky?

When I was driving to morris around 11:30 last night, I saw a big green flash in the sky over in the direction of coal city/braidwood. Does anyone know what this was? It got brighter, like there were two flashes, and then dimmed out. It lasted for about a minute. With all the nuclear plants and everything like that, of course it has me worried...

I heard a transformer blew over that way. It was late, but not sure of the time.

i would understand it being a transformer if it shot sparks, but this was a huge green glow that covered a large part of the horizon. i guess if anyone got hurt though, we would have already heard about it. must not have been anything important

This one is weird!!!! I have been trying to look up explanations of what I saw. Some of the stuff people write is similar, but most seem to be balls of green light. I never saw where it came from but the sky lights up with a green flash. That same night Dec. 24, me and my husband were driving to visit family in North Carolina. It's hard to see a lot of the sky because of the mountains.(We had seen a green flash in the sky in Andrews, NC a few years ago. And the strangest thing was, I had just asked him if he remembered that flash and he said no.) A few minutes later, this huge green flash lit up the ENTIRE sky!! I looked at him with probably the weirdest look ever, and said "That was it!!!!!! Do you remember it now?!?!" He didn't say anything, but it flashed for a moment, then stopped. It flashed three times before it actually quit. I would love to know what this was. Expecially, since someone from another state saw it at the same time!!!

omg im from murphy nc... and i know what you're talking about... we used to have those green flashed all the time! but im soo curious to what it is lol at least i know im not crazy now!

Im from northern illinois and about 3 years ago i was driving by myself facing the western horizon. I saw the same exact thing! The entire horizon flashed green for a few mins on and off, and stayed green during one of the flashes for as long as three seconds. I have not been able to find anyone else who saw the same thing that night, but have done some research and found that there are other stories like this reported across the US. When ever i tell it to people i still get the chills!

Wow... I thought it was just me n my friend! We were out earlier n were talkin staring at the sky, then out of no where a bright greenish light illuminated the sky and we were dumbfounded! We had no idea what it could be. I read people say it was a light from sky to ground but the sky was cloudy and purple-ish all night. Then out of nowhere green for about 5-10 sec. Im worryin but im not sure i want to know what it is... Smh

I am an electrical worker (IBEW local 9) It was electrical. Most likely a downed line. We call it "the green monster" It flashed 3 times cause the sub station will try to re-connect power 3 times before the priary breakers are cut.

It went from the sky to the ground cause that`s what electricity does......goes to the ground. Don`t really know why it`s green flash...Just know it is.

I think the color of the flash would have something to do with the lines proximity to the ground. The closer to the ground the shorter distance it has to travel. The further the distance, the flash will phosphor in the atmosphere. You have to remember these flashes are released energy in excess of 1700 degrees F. They also have an inertia behind them more similar to an explotion. They will react to atmosheric conditions, & the "plasma" (for lack of a better word) Kinda the same priciple as the northern lights do, but in an instant, & of course, Much more dangerously. AS long as your not beween it, & the ground, or within the flash (burns), outside of a heart attack, little danger. Hope I helped!

I also witnessed the same thing but in Sydney, Australia about sometime last week. Me & my neighbors all saw this little green flash first then this just one massive flash across the sky. I hope someone can give me a decent explanation like scott has.

No, I work for a contractor in the electrical transmission/distribution trade, When your power goes out, I`m the one working 16hrs in the rain so your food don`t rot in your fridge. just thought I`d offer an educated explaination. Where did that "OOH SHIT" comment come from????

None of you are crazy. I live in Miami Fl, and ussually walk my dog from about 10:50 to abt 11:50. I have seen this green ball of light, very very bright, with a trail of sparkles in bright yellow-white. Before I had a dog, I used to see it almost every day., however it was not as bright. I though it could be a satellite, since it happens about the same time, in most cases 3 and 4 days in a row. This object always .. ALWAYS cross the sky from noth north east to south, southwest. Trust me you are not crazy... if so we are all in a great group..... GALILEO, EINSTEIN, sOCRATES.... lol.

My brother and i were outside talking with our mom in the front of our house when on our left, we saw a huge bluish green light come up from behind the houses in our cold-de-sac. All the street lights in that area went out at the same time too. They would come back on about a few minutes later, but then it happened two more times. I've been looking this stuff up. It's basically the same as everything i've seen on the web, but i haven't heard of any other lights going out at the same time. My brothers told me they have seen this light before i have, but in the other direction. Mine was in the west. We all find this stuff very fascinating.

was heading out for some takeaway around 10.30pm when i saw a bright green light shotting across the sky, at first i thought it was a shooting star but then relised it was green, i have never seen a green shooting star. Does anyone have any idea whatit was? It was not moving about or hoovering, just moved quickly and disappeared behind the trees.

From my balcony just over the anzac bridge in Sydney, Australia, I just witnessed a green dot of light fall sharply out of the sky, must have been about 10 time faster then a plane. Lasted about 2 seconds. It dissapeared behind some trees in the distance. I grabbed my hdv camera incase it happened again, but saw nothing else. Really, Really weird, never seen anything like this. Happened around 00:15 13/05/08.

I seen the same thing, I was going to a friends house for her party and a big green light covered the sky in the distance, about ten minutes later it happened again. All the street lights and lights in peoples houses started flickering and near my house(My friends claim this)that a light exploded in the local garage, lights dont explode when a line gets cut.

My friends just saw the same thing the other night but it was directly over there house and it went in circles for about a minute

I was in a car with my mom and all of a sudden i saw a big giant green circle thing like half of a circle in front of me but it looked like it was from 3 cities wide all around and not like up in the sky u could see that it was in one area but not in the sky just covering that area like its purple-ish and the u see not on the sky but u see green half circle but at the same time u see purple sky then a white flash and then its gone. also i asked my mom what it was and she said she didnt see anything and it was in front of her also this happened like at 10:55pm - 10:56pm at night. this is the first time i have seen this
