The U.S. Supreme Court is to hear arguments today on the constitutionality of an Indiana law that requires Hoosiers to show government-issued photo identification, such as a driver's license, before voting.

This is a waste of time for our SC. There are other, real issues they should be attending to. If any of you think this is oppressive to your right to vote, move to Cuba and vote! Better yet, go to China and vote.
At least you have the right vote and to have to prove who you are is NOT an inconvience nor illegal. And to Robin Winston, I am a rural voter and THIS IS NOT A PROBLEM for me or any of the other rural voters I know. It is only a problem because you are afraid that you and the other DEMS will lose if you cannot get all of the NON registered or illegal voters. Get a life and at least use a true statement instead of making up facts that hold no truth! Rural voters will vote and have no problem with the ID law.

Let's hope the Supreme Court sees the merits of the law, and not cave in to pressure groups who imply racism. If you notice, it's the "inclusive" party who says that minorities don't have the ability to acquire an ID card. And for those who cry "poll tax," this law allows for a free card for those who can't afford one. Now, go talk to your neighbors and make sure they are ready when the elections come around next time.

Worries about voter fraud are a ruse. If voter fraud is really a problem, why is there not more prosecution for it? It hasn't been occurring, that's why. When I went to vote the last time, I was ready to show my ID, but I didn't get it out. I waited until I was asked. I was never asked to show it.

What on earth is the big deal? Don't you have to have an ID to cash a check, buy a car, rent or buy a house? Get one and shut up already!

First of all you're wrong. There have been cases of fraud. Dead people have voted in the past. Even if there wasn't past fraud we should want to avoid any possible fraud. How would you suppose anyone could be prosecuted when the polling workers don't ask for ID, meaning they don't have a clue if the person voting is who they say they are? Voter ID is absolutely necessary.

"I've got people who'll take me to the license branch" to get a photo ID, said Beyl, a Democrat. "But I don't want to. Why should I have to?"

"I don't want to."? "Why should I have to?"? Sounds like me before I entered my teenage years. Quit being childish and go get your IDs so that we can all vote and deal with the REAL voting fraud - electronic voting with NO PAPER RECEIPT.

This is nothing more than an attempt by Republicans to steal elections by keeping people form voting. I am not opposed to an ID. But the Indiana law makes it extremely difficult to get one.

We should be encouraging everyone to vote and if they need an id, then we need to make that as easy as possible. Instead the Republicans have made it difficult for one reason only. Those who are affected tend to vote Democrat.

I want to know one case, one lousy case in which someone was prosecuted for voting when they were not allowed to. If there is all this fraud, why have we not heard about it?

This is like the idea behind a constitutional amendment to ban flag burning. I haven't heard of a rash of burning flags recently.

Those who say it is no big deal already have ID's and just don't understand the hardships that are imposed by this law. I suggest they volunteer to drive those who need the ID to the places where they can get such an id, do it free of charge. Consider it your civic duty.

No this is only another attempty by Republicans to control elections.

I disagree with Repubs. trying to steal elections. I could say the same about Demos and illegals. The problem is bigger than repubs. or demos. ID's are needed to verify the person voting is who they say they are. Nothing more than that. I do not understand the logic of having trouble getting an ID. You go to the BMV with a utility bill and a birth certificate and you walk out with an ID. Glad to hear though you aren't opposed to the Voter ID law though.

How can this be an attempt by the republicans to steal the elections?? Indiana law does not make it hard for anyone to get an id,, they just require you to prove who you say you are. WOW! NOVEL IDEA!! Same thing in voting, PROVE WHO YOU ARE.
NONE of this would be a problem if everyone who voted was honest. This whole issue is being raised by the ACLU (Democrats in disguise).

this is really bull crap how did this even get that far! When i didn't have a drivers license i had to have a state ID. Now people seem to think they should just vote and not have to prove who they are. Then they have something to hide, probably not legal. You have to have ID to do anything including cashing a check, writting a check the list could go on and on. Looks like some people just want to buck the system period. To much time on there hands.

You make yourself look foolish talking about hardships. How about the hardships of those soldiers who have served so that we might be able to vote? No, you would rather complain and sit on your *ss about having to go to a BMV and get an ID.

How can you prosecute somebody for voting fraud when the current system isn't capable of catching the cheats? Think for a second. How can they be caught when all it takes is walking into a precinct and give a name that is registered in that precinct and then they give you a ballot. THINK!!!!!!!!!! I promise it won't hurt.

How about this article from September 21, 2006 where 53 people in Lake County, Indiana were charged with more than 220 felony charges of voter fraud?

Hope that clears things up for you.

Good post and you're right. They have something to hide and that something is a hidden agenda of allowing people to commit voter fraud and possibly make it easier for illegals to vote.

They don't want to get an ID. That would make the voting system more able to protect against voter fraud (ie. making it easier for illegals to vote as one example).

Oh, I don't know...could it be because it's a law? Who cares if you don't like it. There are a lot of laws I don't like, but I abide by them anyway. Get off your lazy arse and get an ID. Everyone should have one.

Was a single one of those charges related to in-polling place voter fraud?(Hint: the answer is NO). This law ONLY seeks to prevent voters from falsely prentending to be someone else while PHYSICALLY voting. There has never been one single fraud charge in Indiana history of such a case.
This law is a sham. It purports to stop voter fraud, but does absolutely nothing to actually stop the kind of fraud that occurs (mainly, absentee fraud). I am not agaist measures that effectively stop voter fraud. However, I am absolutely not in favor of measures that disenfranchise voters while offering ZERO prevention of actual voter fraud.
It's a balance. Is preventing voter fraud worth disenfranchising certain voters? Under some circumstances, the answer will be yes. Not here. The benefits of this law will be next to irrelevant (becaue it doesn't address the kind of voter fraud that actually occurs in Indiana). The negatives will be large. The law must go.
