Full story: TwinCities.com

A mother of seven is accused of running a house of horrors for pets at her suburban Long Island home, forcing her children to help torture them and burying at least 20 dogs in her backyard - animals neighbors now fear were beloved pets that mysteriously disappeared over the years.

Yeah, duct tape her mouth, then throw her in a cage with a bunch of angry pittbulls for about two minutes. Then take her out and put her in prison.

I owned and operated a large east coast animal hospital for 42 years. There were 28 Veterinarians on the staff, so we saw many thousands of pet owners over the years. My experience was that those owners ,that were mean to their animals, were also mean to other people. Those that abused their animals were far more likely to abuse other people than the average population. The police need to look closely at this womens relationship with her kids. I would bet she has physically abused them.
Interestingly I also found that young people who were addicted to drugs, were far more likely to recover from their addiction, if they worked with animals. I believe it was because the animals showed them unconditional love. We established a program where addicted teenagers worked with the animals, feeding and caring for them. The recovery rate for these kids was far higher than those that had typical therapy. It did not matter what the substance abuse was. Kids on heroin or just pot recovered!

"Douglas McDonough, 21, who turned his mother in to authorities on Nov. 5, called the home "a concentration camp for the animals" in comments to reporters after the arrest. "

While I applaud him turning in his nutcase Mom, what took so long?

I bet her neighbors animals are part of the dogs in the back yard. The poor helpless animals.

Dear AP writer,

you should quickly apologize for you completely over-hyped and revoltingly insensitive headline.

Sure this lady is a freak but to compare what she's doing to the holocaust is beyond incredibly stupid.

Guys, im an animal lover...but aren't we missing the bigger picture here? She was FORCING HER KIDS to torture these animals? I mean the animal part is sad and tragic, but imagine what damage has been done to these kids now... She should go away for a very long time, not just for animal abuse but for child abuse as well.

I agree 100%. These are animals not people but some I know love to put animals on the same level or ahead of people.

Yes, she just also be charged with animal abuse. And I wouldn't be surprised if years down the road her children do not treat animals well. She has certainly caused some amount of mental issues within her children.

I do not question her son not reporting this sooner. He is a 21 year old, just a couple of years ago still a kid. This is his MOTHER. And what mental crap did she cause him as he was growing up? I think it is rare and unlikely that a child would have reported their parent. So I say kudos to the son. Good job.

You could be looking at a LOT more than the children harming only animals when they grow up....to be forcing those kids to do what she had them doing at their ages is real serious stuff from a psychological standpoint.
