In Michigan, drive a crooked line to follow the 45th Parallel,...

ATLANTA, Mich. -- Sometime around 1970, a geography club marked a route across Michigan called the Polar-Equator Trail.' The Michigan Legislature declared it a major tourist attraction.

Here's a possible way to maybe promote tourism in Atlanta. How about the "town on the 45th parallel". I'm sure some of you could come up with some ideas.

Talk to John Zollars at Northwoods Gallery. There is a 45th parallel group. Also the Chamber of Commerce is working on something that has to do with promoting the 45th parallel

Do you really think that a non- existant line is going to draw any type of crowd at all??

what does John Zollars not have a group for ??

One last question: how do you go about promoting a parallel?

I dont see this being any more enticing to a passing motorist as say the elk in the box or the river(dam) uptoen.

I really cant see how this is even a thought is anyones head. Seems like your just reaching out for anything now!!!

The parallel is not visible to most eyes, but devotees of the intagible world of latitudes and longitudes have here and there incarnated the 45th in physical monuments for the rest of us to see. In small towns and along country highways the 45° traveller will find simple road signs and elaborate stone markers alerting all passersby to think about how these particular places are connected to the rest of the globe, and by extension to our place in the entire cosmos.
There are groups who find this very interesting, and lots of events planned all around the globe regarding the 45th and what it means. It may be quirky, but there is a lot of interest and therefore should be used to draw people to this area. If you go to this link you will find Atlanta is not the only place who recognizes the 45th parallel is something you can have fun with and is a draw. At least John Zollars and others are trying to do something for Atlanta. "Reaching out for anything now" is better than doing nothing. Don't knock the people who actually care - they have devoted their lives to try and make Atlanta a better place. They deserve kudos!!

Yes John and some others really try to help this town and sometimes I wonder why, as they try so hard and the rest just don't seem to care. Everybody wants change but nobody has the ambition or the time then they slap your face for trying, go figure Atlanta

Oh go back to Walmart, You will never see the virtue in anything being done here. If you'd open your eyes you would see that it takes people working together to make things work, what have you done lately for Atlanta??????

So your reaching for anything now?
The city stuck all thier money into a courthouse, and animal shelter, and now the NEW 911 desk.
Wow really going places isnt it???

The fact still remains that Atlanta is a dump, the people that live here screw each others wives, girlfriends, husbands, probably the pets and wildlife also.

They talk behind each others back, steal from each other. and collect thier welfare check the entire time !

I dont knock john Z for trying, what else can a person do? not much left in Atlanta now, most everything is either condemned or just sits empty.

I'm sure glad I left the nasty little town, ya'll can have it and all the crap that goes with it as well.

I will come back to visit my kids but thats about it, there are no real friends here, even after a 15 year residency it just isnt for me anymore.

The sheriff department HAD to move the dispatch to new location within the sheriff department building based on state regulations. Dispatchers are not supposed to be visitor greeters, so this will solve that problem and let them focus strictly on dispatching.

Once the new 911 director was put in position, things started to get done that were supposed to be done way sooner, as the elected head of the department was not doing his job concerning this matter.

If I remember correctly, there was money from the state to make these changes with, as they had to be done to be in compliance.

The animal shelter RAISED their won funds over a period of many years, once again, it wasn't funded by the county or as you put it, city.

The courthouse is a whole nother story however...

So your kids live here in this pathetic town. Tell us all, whose, in your own words, "wives, girlfriends, husbands, probably the pets and wildlife" are they screwing. I guess they are stealing and collecting their wellfare checks, too. Maybe their just doing what you taught them.

As for your not having any friends here, you probably don't have any friends anywhere else, either. With an attitude such as yours Atlanta is well rid of you.

It takes two to make a friendship work. By the tone of your post, you're a pretty negative person and I'm sure it would be difficult to befriend you. There are a lot of good, hard-working people in Atlanta and they far outnumber the others. I'm sure if you travel to any town in Michigan, you will have good and bad. It's sad that you choose to focus on the bad. I'm sure you've got a little black cloud floating over your head. Doom and Gloom.

you dont know me thats very obvious charger! I moved to a different town because of the idiots in this one. I got sick of hearing gossip, nonstop problems from everyone.
People I have known from this town for nearly 20 years end up stabbing you in the back. When you thought they were a true friend.
Hell I had more real friends when I lived in Detroit.
Thats a city I hope I never see again.

I can honestly say that the new town I am in (near traverse city) is much better that Atlanta. They have resturaunts that are open for supper - can you imagine only driving 5 minutes for a meal? There is more that 2 gas stations, and we even have a few choices when it comes to shopping without putting 100 miles on the odometer.

Well anyways I know that you no longer live in Atlanta either - but you sure are here everytime someone leaves some critisizm about your favorite little town.

But hey it's a free country so you enjoy this little gossiping hickville USA -I'm sure I'll come back I do have 2 people here I still enjoy visiting -(they are related to me

I find it very sad that you have such a negative view of Atlanta, make no mistake this town has its share of trash, but so does the area where you live. A community is what its citizens make it and I've found for every "dirt bag" there's 10 who are a credit to the community. I too have lived in Atlanta for 30 plus years and was born and raised in Detroit. I'll gladly stay here and do what I can to improve my area. You took a different approach, split and whine about Atlanta. Did you ever stop to consider maybe you had no friends because of your attitude re: all of us "inbred trash"? The volunteers who work aat the animal shelter, CofC, PTA, Church groups, faternal service clubs and good neighbors do make the difference and its sad you can't see the good in our town.

Very well said! I too have lived in Atlanta for many years . I moved away for a few years and came back. This is a good little town with many wonderful people in it and when I had to make a decision about where I wanted to be I chose to "come home".

Yes, I will always come back to defend my favorite little town! Life is what you make of it no matter where you live. Don't blame it on the "town" or other people. We are all responsible for our own happiness. I'm happy that you've found someplace you feel comfortable living. However, I'm sure there is gossiping there, just like everywhere else. The key is to distance yourself from it and take the high road by not participating.

Daily Horoscope for December 20

Sagittarius

Once again, the domestic atmosphere isn't exactly peaceful. Someone is still all worked up, and you may have come out in sympathy by now. Try to discuss things with as much objectivity as you can muster, otherwise, with Mars now retro, the conversation will soon disintegrate into a bad-tempered spat or a slanging match in which you try to catch one another out. It's important to clear the air.
