Here we go again !! Helmets ARE NOT REQUIRED BY LAW. Why report it? was the pickup driver wearing his seat belt? This lady probably died from a broken neck, caused by whip lash of being hit from behind by a 4000 pound truck. it's the same old tired story about helmets. They are wonderful under certain conditions, but they are not and never will be effective against blunt force trauma.

it's an idiot law that does not require helmets and insurance on motorcycles.

it's the taxpayers who wind up paying in the long run because of the macho drivers of these bikes.

It's an idiot that thinks a helmet will render the user injury proof. Do you know if the rider/s have insurance or not? Your simply an uninformed maroon who blames a victim in this case of neglegence
for not wearing a helmet.

You can fix broken limbs, you can stop internal bleeding, you can live (although possibly paralyzed) with a broken back. They can replace organs, replace blood, and do many other prochedures to repair serious injuries. Life won't be exactly the same as before, but at least you have a chance.

But the ONE THING they can't "fix" is your brain. Once it's gone, it's gone. So motorcyle riders CHOOSE to not protect the ONE THING that can't be fixed are simply ASKING for death.

Personally, I think they DESERVE what they get...

Is it possible that helmets don't work? Go to a motorcycle shop and examine a Department of Transportation-approved helmet. Look deep into its comforting plush lining, and hidden amidst the soft fuzz you'll find a warning label: "Some reasonably foreseeable impacts may exceed the helmet's capability to protect against severe injury or death."

What is a "reasonably foreseeable" impact? Any impact around 14 miles per hour or greater. Motorcycle helmets are tested by being dropped on an anvil from a height of six feet, the equivalent of a 13.66-mph impact. If you ride at speeds less than 14 mph and are involved only in accidents involving stationary objects, you're golden. A typical motorcycle accident, however, would be a biker traveling at, say, 30 mph, and being struck by a car making a left turn at, maybe, 15 mph. That's an effective cumulative impact of 45 mph. Assume the biker is helmet-clad, and that he is struck directly on the head. The helmet reduces the blow to an impact of 31.34 mph. Still enough to kill him. The collisions that helmets cushion effectively--say, seven-mph motorcycles with seven-mph cars--are not only rare but eminently avoidable.

Another reason helmets don't work: An object breaks at its weakest point. Some helmet advocates argue that while helmets may not reduce the overall death rate, they prevent death due to head trauma. Jonathan Goldstein, a professor of economics at Bowdoin College, in Brunswick, Maine, wondered how this could be. If fatal head traumas were decreasing, then some other kind of fatal injury must be rising to make up the difference. Applying his expertise in econometrics to those aforementioned CDC statistics, Goldstein discovered what was happening. In helmet-law states, there exists a reciprocal relationship between death due to head trauma and death due to neck injury. That is, a four-pound helmet might save the head, but the force is then transferred to the neck. Goldstein found that helmets begin to increase one's chances of a fatal neck injury at speeds exceeding 13-mph, about the same impact at which helmets can no longer soak up kinetic energy. For this reason, Dr. Charles Campbell, a Chicago heart surgeon who performs more than 300 operations per year and rides his dark-violet, chopped Harley Softail to work at Michael Reese Hospital, refuses to wear a helmet. "Your head may be saved," says Dr. Campbell, "but your neck will be broken."

You are a pretty uneducated person there have been several accidents that have caused severe injury due to a helmet it depends on the accident. some have been better off with out one.. Just like a seat belt I AM A MOTORCYCLE RIDER I DO CHOOSE TO WERE A HELMET SO WOULD I BE DESERVING OF A ACCIDENT CAUSED BY ANOTHERS NEGLEGENTS!!! WHAT IF I was killed then whos fault is it I hope you are not on any road I travel...

my husband and i ride all the time and to those who said the bikers deserve to die are ignorant, no one deserves to die !! we fortunately have the right to choose in this state as well as others if we want to wear a helmet and that has nothing to with this accident. this was an act of stupidity whether in a car or on a bike it was a stupid stunt and had nothing to do with the fact that a helmet was not worn. just remember look twice ,save a life !!

Why don't idiots like you who have probably made more stupid choices than getting on the back of a motorcycle shut your mouths and instead think about the people who have to deal with things like this for the rest of their lives. For instance the woman's 2 year old granddaughter who has to live the rest of her life not knowing her nana. Or her son who had to come home and lay his mother to rest before returning to fight for our freedom. Nothing makes me more mad than people who show no compassion for those that have to live the rest of their lives facing tragedy like this. All in all, the lesson here for you should be to look inward and cherish everyday that you have with your family. Because you know what? There are people missing their daughter, neice, mother, and grandmother here. The last thing they need is someone like you voicing a worthless opinion!

Thank you Overland Park, KS for writing that comment. My husband and I know Tim and Denise Dixon and it is so very disrespectful to read some of the comments posted on here. The family will read these comments and it will hurt them to see how mean people can be. They are going through a devistating time right now and instead of reading prayers and wishes, it is "who's fault is it". I wish for Tim a full recovery because he is a friend with a very big heart. I wish for Denise to rest in peace and for her sons and grandaughter, to hold on to the memories and be strong to make it through this.

Yes, and in the meantime, you illiterate moron, there will be many times over that accidents involving cars and that many more people getting killed in their cages. Perhaps you should start advocating those folks start wearing helmets and padded suits as they drive to their doom? How about putting everyone on a bicycle to cut the death rate, or better yet, make us all walk? It may come as a surprise to you, but as stated in previous posts, helmets solve nothing, they are a hindrance to hearing and seeing
and very uncomfortable on a hot day, preventing the escape of built up body heat. As far as "Natural Selection making the world a smarter place," it apparently hasnt worked which is evidenced by the posts of knuckle draggers like you.

There is no way on Gods green earth that you or anyone else can equate being in a car with riding a motorcycle. A car is good for one thing: to get from point A to point B,in lousy weather. A motorcycle, however,is a different thing altogether. The people who ride know what Im talking about, and I couldnt care less about what car drivers think. As far as cars being safer, tell that to the thousands and thousands who get killed in them or because of them every year.
