Target calls off plans to open in Scotts Valley

Full story: Santa Cruz Sentinel

Target won't be heading to Scotts Valley to open a new store in Santa Cruz County, though the owner of the proposed location is moving ahead with plans for another retailer to set up shop at the La Madrona Drive property.

Scotts Valley resident Paul Bach, a strong opponent to Target opening on La Madrona Drive, said he was "thrilled" to hear the plans were canceled.

BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR...

'Title Two is proceeding with an application to allow a retail business of the same size Target had proposed, Westman said.'
'City leaders extended the comment period for another 45 days to allow public input on the change from Target to an unknown retailer.'

NOW YOU MIGHT END UP WITH A KOHLS OR ANOTHER NICE KMART..

LAME..

Way to go Scotts Valley. The LAST thing you needed was more tax revenue. The heck with taking in tax dollars from surrounding cities which would benefit your city directly.

No sir. Not for you.

Go it alone. That is your motto.

Bully for you.

Clever too.

I eagerly await stories which detail budget woes that befall your town....library hours being cut back, police and fire having to trim their staffs, programs for your less fortunate among you curtailed due to a lack of revenue.

You sure showed them wicked business types from out of town that you would not stand still for anyone operating a business in your neck of the woods. No sirree.

Looks like those fools on the Scotss Vally City council got their way after all..... Now maybe they can put energy into something that might benefit the city instead of their own twisted egos.

Isn't it nice to know that the WASPs of La Madrona Drive can sleep at night knowing that the unwashed masses won't be shopping near their beloved estates or god forbid, making them late to pick up their entitled offspring.

This town needs revenue--as a bedroom community, its going to find itself in dire fiscal straights if it continues down this path.

Guess you didn't actually READ the article - this was TARGET's decision, not SV's. City Council was always in favor and will likely support new said "retailer" as well, regardless of the impact on the LOCAL citizens (i.e. SV residents), cityscape or culture.

Manana Woods would be MORE affected by the traffic impacts than anyone else. People need to get over this prejudice against the Monte Fiore neighborhood - remember they pay [more] property taxes that send YOUR entitled offspring to school!

I don't like Target anyway. Too many PRIUS drivers shop there. I hope Target goes to the mall in the old Gottschalks, and we keep the land open. IF they do build there, I hope it's a small shopping area like Scotts Valley Corners.

a target next to a hotel? I can't imagine tourists et. al. who need to stay at a hotel want to run across the parking lot to target to pick up chotskys to remember their visit. If anything should go there, maybe a nice restaurant and local attraction businesses. Local artisans. Must everything become a sleezy mall in the county?

Let me put this into English for ya:

Target found it literally MILLIONS OF DOLLARS cheaper to go into C(r)apitola Mall.

I mean, this is a no brainer. Why go through all the hash and trash of developing, when their is open space already dedicated to retail establishments that only require a small buildout, rather than taking on something from the ground up.

Seriously, MILLIONS OF DOLLARS CHEAPER to go to C(r)apitola Mall. Any of Target's boardmembers would deserve to be shot if they did anything different.

Besides, it's not like Target's target demographic is upscale. Let's keep things in perspective. Most of Target's shoppers will come from Watsonville or Live Oak. Keeping the store closer to Watsonville will shave off some of Wal-Mart Gilroy's profits.

Did the La Madrona residents not realize that they were buying real estate in a commercial zoned neighborhood? Or did they just think that since they could afford the mansions, their money would change the outcome of any commercial growth in SV? Scotts Valley has to grow to survive.

Maybe the residents of Monte Fiore are the same kind that buy a house near the airport then complain about the noise. Whatever goes in that parcel (and you know something will) is going to be loud and intrusive. But they had to know that when they bought their homes near an area that is zoned for commercial use.

An REI would be nice! Not as much traffic as a target, and sells stuff I'd buy!

What a great relief! Let's work together to find tax dollars with new businesses that benefit the community and potentially provide jobs that Scotts Valley residents could benefit from - not force fit that will cause such a traffic nightmare that it will make life a living misery for everyone from Scotts Valley to Boulder Creek.

Actually the land was rezoned (it was originally zoned for offices - I know because I was going to move my office there)- anyone who bought property in Monte Fiore knew nothing of the city council's ability to randomly change zoning without input from the community when Target made their intentions known.

It wasn't zoned commercial until Target got interested and then it the zoning changed overnight without input from the residents of Scotts Valley. Also a lot more than the just the people in the neighborhood would be effected - basically anyone who goes to work or comes home on Highway 17.
