The trouble is that our society has become so "tolerant" of bad behavour that we allow disturbed individuals to walk free amoung us. Many of these people present a physical threat at any given moment. Those that do not present a physical threat certainly diminish the quality of life for the rest of us. It is time to draw a tighter, firmer line in the sand. If you exhibit a mental disorder you must be treated for it. The treatments are no longer archaic, frightening, surgery and shock treatments. For the most part they require talk therapy and possibly treating chemical imbalances of the brain. Criminalizing mental illness is not the solution. Mandatory treatment is the solution.

I recall that when I was in high school I had threatened to "kill" someone on more than one occassion. I never did kill anyone, it was a figure of speech. Although i think threats at the very least should be checked out. This is not news. Every child in that school is going to know the identity of the 12 year old girl by 9:15 am. We are talking about a twelve year old child going through very difficult changes in their life. Now this child is the center of attention, making their trip into puberty even that much harder. Lets not blow everything out of proportion, because of other incidents.

I agree. I played football and people in the audience made signs and such that said "Kill the Bulldogs". We didn't actually kill anybody and we didn't think those students were making threats. Pretty soon students will only be able to cheer "Plense engage in athletic contest".

My child goes to this middle school and I am sure knows this girl. The school has to take every threat reported seriously for legal reasons. When we went to high school there were not specific laws and policies regarding this type of behavior as there are now. So, from a legal standpoint the district must act on it.

As if we need further evidence that we are living in a police state.
This is very sad for a 12 yr old to be charged for what used to be considered "mischief". Maybe she's troubled, maybe she's been bullied, but she's a child. A good talking-to and a chore like washing the blackboards in school used to be the remedy for this kind of infraction.
My friends and I made prank phone calls when we were kids, sometimes with threats. We never hurt anyone and there was no intention of violence. Just kids trying to act like big-shots...

It is getting a little over the top with this zero tolerance. The problem is situations like Columbine and Virginia Tech remind us of what happens when we ignore things like this. Should this 12 yo been arrested? Probably not. She should have been talked to and evaluated by a professional to determine if this is a serious threat or just joking. She had to take this as a lesson learned.

Really getting tired of the hype surrounding adolescent nonsense.

Couldn't we be using these resources a bit more wisely?

The paranoia shown by Long Islanders is astounding. Too much pot in your youth, aye!

Columbine and Virginia Tech are meant to remind us that we need to "love our neighbor". When people forget, tragedy happens.

Stop wasting time with all the paranoid action. You're turning our kids into neurotic little morons.

Meds making you panic? My kids do go to these schools. Nothing to worry about here. Try relaxing and teaching your child to take care of themselves then you won't need to be so self absorbed and paranoid.

You first. If you're so frightened of everything, you have the problem.

is it just me or is there anyone else getting pi$$ed off at our police-state? Am I the only one so pi$$ed off that I want to lash out and do something horrible to people? Oh wait I should not have said that, now the government is going to send agents to my house, confiscate my stuff, treat me as a terrorist and make me an example. Good bye everyone. See you all back here in 20 years. Also how much longer will it be until name calling is a crime since we are headed that way?

There is indeed a need for restructuring the Child as a whole while he/she was in the age of 4 to 12. a Proper Guidance is required, some time Parents tend to loss their Cool to Child and b/w themselves... These are very important areas
