First you need to have a physical or mental condition that prevents you from engaging in any substantial gainful activity. The condition will be expected to last more than 12 months or result in death. You'd of course be under 65 which is retirement age. You'd have to have accumulated 20 social security credits in the last 10 years prior to the onset of disability. One additional credit is required for every year by which the worker's age exceeds 42. Now there is an exception. If you can prove you became disabled at or before age 22 you can draw off your parent or legal guardians credits. This of course is for social security disability insurance.
Now for SSI or Supplemental security income you have to be 65+ or Blind or Disabled and you have to reside in one of the 50 states, D.C., Northern Mariana Islands, or are the child of military parent(s) assigned to permanent duty outside of the US, or are a student (certain restrictions apply) temporarily abroad and you have a limited means as outlined by SSI regulations, and you apply.
Substantial gainful employment in 2012 is the ability to make $1010 for a disabled person or $1690 for those whose disabilities include blindness.
You don't just sign up and get handed a check.

I would trade my diability for my job back of 35 years in a second. I had money, self respect, and I made a difference in other peoples life. I raised my kids by myself and not on welfare and sometimes had to work 3 jobs at one time to do it. Now I am no longer able to hold down even a part time job. Yes I have been on a vacation or two since becoming disabled which caused me great pain. I try not to use the electric chairs at walmart so the overweight people can have them and that causes me great pain just to go get a few groceries is unbearable at times. I could explain more but this is enough to let you people know that just because I am disabled I refuse to crawl up into a bed and die because you think I am not worthy. There are days when it not so bad and I don't show to people the pain cause I don't want to be pitied. If I am able to go to town on one day and get by without anyone noticing the pain I am in then I have acomplished something. some days it is diffecult to get up and go to the restroom in my on home. what employer would hire someone who would have to call in on all those days when I could barely move. today is not such a bad day buy typing this is causing me discomfort so I will except my little check 1 a month that does not even pay all my bills so my kids have to help me and at times they help me get around. I didn't get a crazy check even though my kids say I'm crazy for pushing so hard to keep going. I pray every day for a miracle of healing so I can go back to work. I miss it so much. I had a wonderful job and I was good at it. As far as my medical bills being paid what a joke. Only part of my meds cost 589.00. per month and I never get even part because on this little check I can't afford them and be able to eat too. If you think a person on this check has it made plus the pain and suffering I go through is worth it. I will trade places with you like I said. However, I will keep on trying to live a normal life the best I can. If I'm able for 1 hour to plant a few flowers I will try. No doubt the pain I suffer afterwards will make me wish I had not done so, when they bloom I will be glad I did. Look down on me if you choose but I worked myself to death and never took a handout til now. I earned the right to get a little back now that I am not able to give anymore. All I have left is Hope. Hope that I can struggle on my own a little longer to not be a burden on my family. I will show strengh even if it kills me regardless of my disability. sorry you people are so down on the disabled that draws a check, I just hope you never have too

It's not that, people are griping about- it's the ones that don't really need it and lie their way in. God Bless You- I know some need help and can't get it- I may need help some day myself-

Daily Horoscope for May 18

Virgo

Matters of the heart take an unexpected turn today. You might be strongly attracted to someone you've never looked at twice until now, or you could fall for someone who's much older or younger than you. If you're already involved in a relationship, either you or your partner will want to make it more exciting and spontaneous. Is this a suggestion that will go down well?
