Unfortunately, as so many places discover when a child goes missing from their town, missing children are a traumatic, frustrating, and common problem, throughout the world. Did you realize there is a U.S. National Federal Program created and operating in this country to help find and prevent missing children? It's called the "NALC/USPS CHILD ALERT PROGRAM". The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), the U.S. Post Office, and the Dept. of Justice are the three Federal agencies responsible for the management and operation of this important National Program. According to the written directions and the original intent of the Program, "within 24 hours of the reported missing child every Post Office in the country is required to have the Missing Child's photo flyer id posted for display in the Post Office "box lobby", so the general public can view the flyer, and in the workroom floor area so every postal carrier can view the flyer before and/or after their route." Again unfortunately, this vital National help find Missing Children Program is not being managed or operated according to the written instructions or the original intent. One not-for-profit charity discovered, while doing their own help find missing children Program (modeled after the Federal National Program), that out of 2,700 different Post Offices they went into on the west coast (WA, OR, CA, AZ, NV, UT, HI) only two (2) of the Post Offices actually displayed the flyers as they are suppose to; however, those two Post Offices proved the Program was actually operating, it just needs to be fixed so all the Post Masters follow the written instructions. The two Post Offices that actually did the Program as it's described are: Manzanita, OR and Elk, CA. Imagine how much more efficient the AMBER Alert would be if every Post Office in the country actually displayed the endangered missing child notices emailed to every Postal Service by the NCMEC. Check the Post Office in your town and see if you find any Missing Child Notices displayed, then get back to me and let me know what you found. The charity mentioned above did leave their Missing Child Post Office Display Binder in Post Offices throughout WA; however, we found many Post Masters remove the binder filled with flyers of missing children. Let me know if the binder is still in the Post Office in your town.
