Sound off! (July 5)

Full story: Las Cruces Sun-News

If the census department already knows what the population is, why go through the bother and expense of actually counting people? If you're short on cash in this economy, just go rob somewhere at gunpoint.

Another "boring" 4th of July Celebration brought to you by The City Of Las Cruces. They could have at least brought in some descent entertainment but it's just a waste of our tax dollars if you ask me.

To people who are legally owners of guns, you should pay attention to HR 45, The Blair Holt's Licensing and Record Act of 2009. It will make it illegal for you to own a gun unless it's registered and you've met many other requirements.
As a legal owner of guns, I have researched HR45. It does not have any co-sponsors, and has been introduced by the same knuckle-neck time after time over the years. The Dems aren't stupid, they saw what happened after the Brady Bill was passed the first time. After 9-11 the resolution of the American people about gun rights has only gotten stronger.

My family enjoyed the 4th celebration. Quit being negative and just enjoy life. My children, husband and I loved the fireworks and reminded our children what a wonderful country we live in. Today? I feel blessed.

Anyone in the High Range/Sonoma Ranch neighborhoods been receiving partially opened mail or mail that is completely open and missing contents? If so, would you please notify the postmaster and make a formal complaint?
You're correct, as it's been occurring off Capistrano. The only thing is it isn't just occurring in Sonoma Ranch exclusively. The same thing has been occurring at my two homes, one in Soledad Canyon & the other on the East Mesa.

I'd advise you to keep monitoring your credit, as my son & I both had someone trying to open up credit cards under our names.

"If you're short on cash in this economy, just go rob somewhere at gunpoint. Seems like anyone can get away with it with our great police just catching so many people."

Kind of like the red light / speed cameras .... robbery without a robber present. I do not mind paying a fine if I am actually speeding or run a light, but it is much nicer to be caught by a human than a camera.

Why hasn't our infamous federal government stepped in to control entertainment and major athlete's salaries? It's ludicrous that Simon Cowell is being offered $144 million a year to stay on American Idol."

*****

You people watch that crap ad nauseum. It is called supply and demand. Your need to see Simon ridicule people is the reason he is able to demand the cash.

The fault is YOURS.

Only an extremely ignorant mental midget, dittohead, or foxhole could continue to spew the "To people who are legally owners of guns, you should pay attention to HR 45,...." CR@P!

From SNOPES:

"As was the 2007 version of Blair Holt's Firearm Licensing and Record of Sale Act, the current version has been referred to the House Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security, and the fact that THE BILL DOES NOT HAVE EVEN A SINGLE CO-SPONSOR makes it unlikely that it will ever be brought to a vote before Congress, much less passed. ESPN Outdoors correspondent Wade Bourne summed up the bill's chances of passage thusly:

So, how likely is the Blair Holt bill's chance for passage? Pro-gun activists are vigilant but don't seem overly worried about it. They point out that the bill's failure to attract co-sponsors is an indication of a lack of enthusiasm for it among other congressmen. They feel it is too far-reaching and repressive of gun owners' rights to merit serious consideration by a majority of Congress."

Lawrence Keane of the NSSF [National Shooting Sports Foundation] states, "If this bill passes, Democrats would likely lose (control of) their chamber in upcoming mid-term elections (2010). The leadership in the House knows that."

As a legal and responsible gun owner, I do not want the government putting undue restrictions on my right to own firearms, and open the door for them to seize my weapons on any political whim. The reason for the Second Ammendment was to keep the power mongers in Washington nervious.

My husband and our kids also enjoyed the festivities.(I had to work) From the pics and vids they sent me, it seemed pretty nice. I'm glad the City put on such a good show.

The bill might not pass, but has anyone recently attempted to buy ammunition? There AIN'T none to be had. Without bullets a weapon makes a nice paperweight.

Good morning Lady. Sorry to hear about your identity theft problems. A webcam pointed at your mailbox may provide some useful evidence.

That's why I reload my own ammo. Powder, primers, and bullets are in good supply.

Hi! Great suggestion, but I'm hoping the USPS will install the multi-mailbox towers. That would honestly give me the most peace of mind. Having been a victim of identity theft before, I set up security features on my & my kids credit. That is why this unscrupulous person only got to "try to open accounts". Had I not had those measures in place, we'd probably be going through a grueling ordeal. Thanks though, until we get those new mailbox towers...I'll heed your advice.

No. The majority of people are not criminally-minded and have a conscience and respect for others' property. If I find myself short on cash the simple solution is to reduce expenses and try to earn more money. The perps who have robbed area businesses recently are most likely not financially struggling - they're lazy criminals.

"If the census department already knows what the population is, why go through the bother and expense of actually counting people?"

Because it is dictated by the Constitution! Unfortunately the Party of NO has put a hold on the nominated Director of the Census and Reich-wing propaganda machine has been flat out LYING about many aspects in their unrelenting attempt to create fear and distrust in the administration.

The wing-nut from Minnesota, Rep Michele Bachmann received TWO "PANTS ON FIRE" ratings from poltifact for her LIES about the census, In one, she was just regurgitating the Reich-wing propaganda Big Lie. "ACORN will be a paid partner with the Census Bureau and '"they will be in charge of going door-to-door and collecting data from the American public.'"
