Alabama is mainly farm country, but the larger cities are not that backward, Mobile is growing in leaps and bounds, has tons of history and culture, and like any large city it has its problem area's. But the job market is thriving daily, and life is pretty good for the most part. Alabama and most of the south is no longer the po dunk area that most in north seem to think they are without bothering to visit. Take a trip south and check it out before you conddem it.

Wow, I'm floored but not surprised to read some of the comments on this board. To hear someone from another region compare Southern adults to an eight year old saddens me deeply. I am a transplant to the area-having lived on every coast of this nation...including Detroit, MI where I was born. What saddens me most is that people in other parts of the country use infantile and uneducated responses like some of the ones I've read here as a barometer of how things are actually in the South. Don't. It's blanket generalization that perpetuates the situation. Yes, racism is still alive in the South, but in my opinion, it's slowly dying out as the older generations die...for the most part. And yes, I agree, it's not only in the South...I lived in Norfolk, VA. for six years, and let me tell ya, it's surely not dead there. I am of mixed decent (white and black), the same as Obama. I moved to Louisiana when I was eight years old and had to put up with racist comments from both sides of the fence...too dark to be white, to light to be black....one drop of black is all it takes. Racism reads a TRADITION of ignorance folks. I voted for Obama, not because he is black but because Bush's reign was a bad blur with a horrid war to boot. We as parents have a DUTY to teach our children the difference from right and wrong...to let the tradition of racism die a complete death. God bless you all.

I've recently been reading stories about how the election of Obama has really stirred up some racism in the deep south (more so than it already was). So..how many people here are afraid or worried or just mad that a black man won? For the record I'm white, not racist, and I voted for Obama..but how I voted doesn't matter. If it didn't matter how you voted then why bring it up? Bush is white and he sucked as president, for eight years.

I think you are not being truthfull about leaving Mobile in the early 80's. If you left because of the hanging, you'd know what his name is. I am a proud republican and probably have been considered by some as being a racist. BUT, I will say that racism comes from the black community as well. I can't tell you how many times I have heard black people say they didn't get this or that because of racism. In reality it was just the proper decision to be made. Action speaks louder wrote: <quoted text> Hey Proud Republican, you're absolutely right we should only care about if he can do the job and keep the promises he made. My question to you is. How can you be a proud Repubican, when George Bush after eight years didn't do neither!!!! I already know the answer to that. You need not reply!

White people will not have to worry to long. If the black people keep killing each other. there will not be any. Eric Womack wrote: I live in Detroit, Michigan. Racist, no such word!!! The negro behavior is what has turned people OFF!!!! Look at the Dept.Of Justice crime figures black crime has ruined every metro city. European whites have been forced to move outside of city limits to protect family life, culture and values. If you call that racist then good for me!

I'm not racist but after reading a few of these my coulrophobia is kicking in.
I'll make it easy for you folks from north Baldwin. Coulrophobia is the fear of clowns. What I mean by my comment above is that I think some of you are clowns. How do you uppity folks from Spanish Fort to Fairhope tolerate these inbreds from up there?

I can't believe after all of this time, people still judge each other. I always wanted to live in America, but as a bi-racial person where does this leave me? I have white people hating me because I am white mixed, and then I have black people hating me because I am black mixed. What concerns me is that I am being judged because I was born in the skin I'm in. It's not like I had a selective choice before birth. It is a sad world we live in when we can't get past skin color. Are people that racist that they can't get past their own fears and inhibitions? Worry about all of the homeless and sick & dying in the streets. What if there was a cure for cancer and there were certain conditions put in place based on race?, but you didn't get the treatment for your son, daughter or mother who was sick and dying because they were white, or if they were black or if they were hispanic, because they weren't chinese or any other nationality? What difference does it make? Peel anyone's skin back and we are all the same. All's I can say that if racism can control the emotions and minds of these kind of people, they are weak, cowardly and insecure beings who need to hate to the point that it doesn't warrant any common sense. When you are lacking common sense, that says it all! For all you racists out there, you don't hate because someone is black, or white, chinese, arabic or hispanic, you hate because you don't love yourself enough and the biggest fear of all is CHANGE.... I pity the world's future because the children today grow up and become leaders.... Remember after your dead and gone it will always be the predecessors that have paid and paved the way for our and future ancestors that will pay for your hatred.

No one in Alabama are racists. They just know the truth about the Planet of the Monkeys ! Why don't you buy a copy of the Press-Register and read about the out of control monkey gangs who are making Mobile a dangerous place to live. There's a reason why when the darks move in the lights move out.

Hey hey hey! Calm down guys! I thought the word 'racist' has gone down the toilet in America! I've noticed it but there's none in the University where the blacks and whites can be seen playing sports together. We are the new generation. We've tasted racism in our childhood, please don't let it happens again.
