'Prom Night In Mississippi' & The Myth Of Post-Racial America

Full story: Ypulse

This week I watched the HBO documentary "Prom Night In Mississippi" - and was struck by the contrast between what happened in Charleston, Mississippi, in 2008, and this notion that we are living in some sort of post-racial society.

After watching 'Prom Night in Mississippi' I was in shock. I could not believe how these kids had grown up. I'm a 23 year old white-hawaiian and I was raised to be open minded and to give anyone a chance no matter what race or religion. I'm having diffucltly understanding the reasons of why the town is still so segregated. I would love to go and help the kids fight for what they believe in. Thankfully Morgan Freeman helped the teenagers make their own decision. If it wasnt for him we still would not know about this lil town in Mississippi. Once these kids step outside of town and go to college it will be hard for them to adjust to people not judging them. Here in Houma we all mix together, white, black, indian, asians and mexicans. If I can help this town come to reality please let me know.

I watched the documentary. At first I was thinking that its a small backwards town and as much as we may disagree with it. We shouldn't impose our values onto others.

But as I watched. I saw that more, and more of the kids did want to go to a mix prom, and others did not. These kids have been together since they were 5 years old. The same class. Why should they go to different proms.

Personally, the fear people of a Black men and White women grinding on each other is ridiculous. Everyone had a great time. I hope the prom continues to happen.

I'll have to agree. What a shock! But I feel that the integrated prom should be fedarally funded wheras the all white or all black proms should remain if privately funded. That way there is a balance for those who mix and those who don't ;}

BTW...the music was ALL black. I think they should have integrated music genre as well but since Freeman funded it...

People do need to understand when they watch this film that everybody in this town is not racist. There are a few that are - as there are everywhere - but the racism is by both races. There are as many black people that don't want to hang around white people as the other way around. In fact, these days, I believe it has shifted to be more racist from blacks towards whites. It is sad that racism still exists, but keep an open mind and realize that sometimes it's a two way street - not just ignorant white people. There's just as many ignorant black people who feel the same way. One day it would be nice to not see color and just see people, but at this point, that's just not the case all the time - not by either race. AND there are also many white people and black people around the town who are friends with and help out people of any color. Outsiders always look for the bad in people, but this little town also has a whole lot of good people, too. Too bad you didn't get to see that in the movie.
