were there sharks in the water over the weekend of june 4-8? the ocean had flags of NO SWIMMING, and the sheriff helicopter was constantly running abck and forth across the beach rnning people out of the water.. I had a friend in destin,,she says they said sharks were in the water there the reason the beaches were closed.

The media said the beach was closed to swimmers due to rip tides and strong currents. I am here for the month of June. If the 2 red flags are flying you need to stay out of the water regardless of the reason.
By the way, yesterday, June 18 my family and I saw a shark right next to the beach that was at least 7 foot long. It was swimming along on the other side of the green seaweed that is here in the mornings.(PCB) I'm not sure if this is a common occurance, but it made us more aware of our surroundings while in the water. Fear will keep you out of the water..knowledge will keep you safe. |

should i still go to panama even if all what im going there for is the beach?

Yes! The beach is great. Just keep up with the flags flying on the beach....2 red flags mean to not swim. purple flag means dangerous marine animals. I haven't seen that flag flying. Just don't swim in murky water that you can't see thru. The beach is great! Water temp is 87. Just be informed. Remember the beach...and this is anywhere you would go...is not our habitat, so you have to be knowledgeable about the dos and don'ts!! But PCB is super, duper!! |

www.BeachHunter.net and download the book "How to be safe from sharks, jellyfish, stingrays, and rip currents" This is a free download and gives some excellent info that every beach goer needs to know. You might want have a hard copy to take with you. |

Saw several small sharks It did make me wonder about having my kids in the water thats for sure

Sharks are obviously in the water here and just because a shark is swimming around doesn't mean its going to attack someone. But sharks are unpredictable so if you see one don't freak out just get away from it if you can. And if you must fight the creature, don't splash around and laugh because it might rip your head off.

It is funny how much we get worked up about sharks considering how rare shark attacks are in America. Panama City Beach will be just fine. It is a great place for a beach vacation. You will get great prices and find out what most Floridians already know: Panama City Beach has great people, seafood, and fishing.
