John Gooch, 1950-2008: Piano man doted on music hall tradition

Full story: The Santa Fe New Mexican

He was big, bold and burly, with a hearty laugh that came from deep down in his stout frame.

Sweet, sassy, and such a talent for quick quip. He brought smiles and smirks and I will miss him. ...born to the purple, in his musical and talented way.

I knew John Gooch many years ago when I would do the bar scene. He was a fun person who "tickled" the ivory of the piano and not "pounded" it. I believe those were his words. He will be missed.

Dear John,

We'll miss you, Master John. You were so much a part of the flavors of Santa Fe. Your music will ring on in my mind's ear and continue to delight and enchant me. Especially those spirituals you played at Hugh Prather's "Dispensable Church."

Go with God, I know you'll be doing music with your fellow angels, Love, Richard Polese

My cousin will certainly be missed, from his purple fanaticism to his love for all things British. The family here is in shock at his passing, but he will always be with us in our hearts and we know he is accompanying the angels.

John was a terrific person! I sang in a few "West End Productions and have always treasured my experiences working with John and other cast members. I will always remember the twinkle in his eyes and his quirky sense of humor. He was a good and loving friend and was always happy to see and hear from us.

God Bless you, John!!!

John,
I'm so glad I finally got to meet you at the McGiffins in the past years. I felt like I had known you forever from the stories I was told by Jim and Carol and know those stories will live forever in our hearts. You will always be known to me as "Gooch" as they so fondley called you.
You will be missed! God Bless!

John will be sorely missed by us all. I will miss him as a fellow voyager to England, a fellow lover of the widest range of music, and years of performing at the Eldorado, Ponce, Kingston, Greer Garson, and even on a moving train! John introduced me to the stage, and I've never felt another be able to read my musical mind the way he did. John, know that your music lives on.

John was talented beyond belief...and I'm so proud to have had the chance to know him and sing with him during his entirely too short time on this earth! I bet he's making the angels roll over in laughter right now! The world will miss his sweet music!I'll always love you, John!

John you will be missed! Oh, and they forgot to mention The Santa Fe Hilton. That's where I met him back in 1982. A real sweetheart!

I'll always remember at Jim and Carol's wedding reception there was a musical revue with John at the keys. When Jinx Junkin was introduced he played the piano trill that you hear when the Wicked Witch of the West appears in "Wizard of Oz". She leveled her gimlet gaze at him and said "I'll get you... and your little dog too!" (now who would want to hurt poor little Ashley...) And I'll never forget when John had to take over directing "Oh What a Lovely War" when the previous director flaked out. The show was kind of a mess but I never had more fun. Gooch, we'll miss you.

I met John in 1970, when we were both hired by a turn-of-the-century theater company in Virginia City, Montana, a holdover from the wild west. John was the spark plug that ignited whatever was flammable in the cast that year. The night I met him, the few cast members who had arrived early were assembled in Bob's bar. He sat at the piano, we gathered around and began to sing, and we tossed songs back and forth all summer. He never faltered, in any style or key. An amazing guy, and I'm very sorry to hear of his passing.

Met John at the Eldorado some 25 years ago. I was so impressed with his effortless manner in playing . We got to talking and I was really impressed with him.
Luckily, I purchased two of his tapes which I continue to listen to. R.I.P.
