We left at about 10:45 so it must have happened after that. Otherwise it was a good time at least while we were there.

Get with it wrote: A physical altercation involving several people taking part the city's main annual celebration? Where was the police report? If someone suffered a bruised shoulder during an altercation at a public event, why was it not reported as a battery? If there was a police report, why did the New Mexican only tell us about it a month later? Did the New Mexican ask for a police report or, just between us girls, we don't consider that kind of violence criminal? And about that reporting... how many people observed this incident? How many people usually attend the Grand Baile? One would think, a month after the fact, a reporter could find one or two people who could describe the size of the crowd -- and whether there were any police or licensed security personnel involved. Violence at the annual celebration of a supposedly "peaceful reconquest" might relate to how Santa Fe confronts violence in its collective narrative. If Santa Fe refuses to acknowledge its violent past, it will not likely find a solid foundation for a peaceful tomorrow. A local newspaper's forgetfulness does not help matters. So the reconquest was peaceful but there was just a disagreement of terms among the celebrants. They were stripped of their deities and its a done deal. All in a day's work.

First of all for EMBARRASSED, why should we get rid of the Fiestas because of some impudent girls. And I do mean girls. Every culture has their battles, every race has their problems. I lived in Germany and saw worse every Octoberfest. Unfortunately, they picked the wrong girl to be a queen, that's all that happened. But once again I say it's who you know that gets you noticed in Santa Fe. Didn't they mention that her dad was a member of the De Vargas staff? Well then what do you know? This girl was obviously playing the part to wear a pretty dress and act cool for awhile. She had no intent of respecting the reason she was there. I think the Fiesta speaks alot about our former history. Why take it away. Next time do a better job of screening these females. It's just disgusting to hear something like that. She was obviously bad news from the beginning.

The Fiesta de Santa Fe and the infamous Fiesta Counsel need to re-visit the meaning of Fiesta. It is,or should be a 1 day, historical, religious celebration. It could be mass at dawn. A re-encatment of Don Diego's return to the city (something our local school kids could watch for their history class) and a solem procession to end the day. I don't recall a "queen" being present in any historical reference to the return of Don Diego. That is it. It not, then the alternative is to quit requiring that the Queen and Court be young, single girls. Allow for interested married, and older applicants to apply for the role of queen. After all, who said the queen of any country is 18 years old. They are just prime for abuse by counsel members. Grow up already. I am talking about the Fiesta Counsel in general.

Of course this sort of story opens up a platform for bigots like DriveByPoster and Sick to malign Hispanic culture in general. Their behavior is mainly due to their ignorance, not because they are Hispanic. You've got to be joking if you think white people are much better. Other than that I LOL'd at this story. God bless northern New Mexico.

It's too bad that this had to happen. Apparently the young women who participate in the event have never been told the true meaning of Fiestas and the events that happen throughout the year to honor it. I keep saying it over and over again, Santa Fe NEEDS to come back to the basic rules that made Santa Fe so unique. The religious effect doesn't even come into play nor does the reasons why we used to have such a grand event every year seem to exist anymore.

God bless northern New Mexico. i'm not a bigot.. i just love reading a story about these 'mightier-than-thou-' supposed 12th generation families getting into blows during what is supposedly their finest moment in history. and what makes it even more special, is that it is the 400th anniversary. maybe instead of the 12 days of christmas, we can have the 400 days of santa fe and have one of these events every day during the countdown. so please don't call me a bigot. i'm an equal opportunity trash basher. trash is trash. nobody gets special treatment from me. why, i'd even call someone from darford, united kingdom garbage.. that is IF they had the audacity to butt into santa fe's affairs in a blog and call me names. do you know what i mean, BRO?

"something you don't think you'll see at a royal event" - Har! Perfectly representative of a time in history when ill-bred monarchs ruled by force of arms. Like so many other bits and pieces of Western culture that are historic droppings on the statues erected to colonialism.

I bet they are part of the 50 percent in this town that didn't graduate high school. Wonder if the DeVargas father was one of the drunk, fighting, DeVargas guys from that fight in the parking lot of the opera a few years back after a fiesta event. Them DeVargas boyz have their reputation too.

Is it me or have sweeping generalizations, such as the ones that many of you have made, are the source of some kind extremely embarrassing fact about history. It was something about slaves and busses. To bad I cannot remember. Honestly it makes me sick to read these comments and think that all of you have real people who have this opinion about women, hispanics, latinos, chicanos, and Santa Feans. The fight is not as nearly appalling some of the things said.
