Fascinating indeed. The current hubbub regarding Gitmo, Abu Gharaib, and the American penchant for torture seems to indicate not too much has changed.

As the article points out, the Indians and Mexicans tortured Bent's party previous to the Army's arrival in Taos. So, Mr. Roma, perhaps the penchant for torture is universal, and not limited to Americans.

Humans, cat, sealions and some other species seem to enjoy torture. But humans torturers seem to prefer torturing other humans...Les

Indians have been torturing their enemies long before Columbus arrived. For that matter, they also frequently ate them - a way to acquire their power. What this has to do with current events escapes me. Indians were not after information.

The Pueblos were under Mexican rule until 1845. The Spanish came in first back in the 1600's and then Mexico took over. The Americans barged in around 1844-45.

Thank God, we were bloodthirsty and savages. Make me glad we cut the throats of the calvary and stole their women. Thank God we were heathens.

Great description of events leading up to and detailing the aftermath of these event can be found in the book "Tom Tobin, Frontiersman" by James E. Perkins. It's a terrific historical biographical account of the historic hise and fall of a frontier in the mountains and valleys of the Rocky Mountains as seen through the eyes of Tom Tobin who, among others, epitomized the self-reliant frontiersman of the 19th century... Check it out, and enjoy...
