NO! No! No! No! These people already feel they are above any law and have gotten away with breaking the law under the guise of "medical marijuana" which is a joke for about 95% of those who claim some medicinal value. You can't tell me these people all need to sit around and self-medicate (or self-intoxicate is more like it) at the same time. Do people taking any other real prescription medication gather all at once to pop their pills? A smoking ban is a smoking ban........PERIOD

Why don't Mike and Valerie just invite all these people to their marijuana garden and sit around there and smoke themselves to death? We don't need them doing so in town in violation of the law polluting the air for those who don't want to inhale their second-hand smoke.

Medical use of mj doesn't have to include smoking. In fact, most doctors advise against it. Why does WAMM continue to promote this at the expense of the movement? Council should stick to their no smoking guns....

I can understand requesting a single tent for the desperately ill patient who has a nauseous reaction while at the event. But a second tent for non-emergency users? That is stretching the law a bit too far and also potentially alienating non-users against the cause. I am a MM patient myself and I think most of us can medicate BEFORE we go to the park.

Or maybe MM patients can medicate across the street from the park. Its not like there are no places to smoke around there.

Maybe the idea of the "festival" was to promote medicinal attributes of marijuana, but come on, the reality is, it's a big pot smoke-in that attracts people from out of town. How can the City ban smoking downtown but allow this? I agree the Council should deny WAMM's request.

This is not as much of a "big pot smoke-in" (or, smoke-out would be more proper)... as the 4/20 UCSC "celebration." You obviously haven't seen that mess if you are considering WAMMFest as a big ordeal... give them a break, they aren't the ones leaving dirty needles in the park!

[This year, "we're going to have to make sure they reduce their impact of secondhand smoke as much as everyone else," Councilman Ryan Coonerty said. "The law was meant to cover all secondhand smoke, and secondhand smoke at WAMMfest is part of it."]
Does Coonerty Jr realize just how silly he appears with this kind of dippy statement?

Council should stick to their no smoking guns.... I'm not an advocate but smoking pot gives a faster reaction time than ingestion...for some undergoing chemo that can make a difference. But WAMM shouldn't promote an "in your face" smoke-in. It's the wrong way to bring attention to the medical uses of mj.

[Police at last year's event said they had no problems, and WAMM provided its own security. Corral said the group will do the same this year. Police spokesman Zach Friend said on Monday that his department does not plan to increase patrols for WAMMfest.]
WAMM provided "its own security", that's the funniest thing I've read all year.

Ryan Coonerty: " All smokers are equal, but some smokers are more equal than others."
Typical Santa Cruz liberal mentality.
I'm sure Baby Coonerty ain't teaching the 14th Amendment or "Animal Farm" during his Intro to Liberal Indoctrination and Hypocrisy class at UCSC.

Cannabis should be exempt from all smoking bans in the city. It does not cause cancer and kill people the way tobacco does nor it is addictive. Driving your car across town puts more dangerous pollutants in the air than all the cannabis smokers in the county combined. It sound like all these posters have moral rather than scientific issues. Deal with your own personal issues and don't bother other people who aren't harming you.

It is hard to teach students to not use drugs when the city approves illegal (federal) activity in public. I understand the medical marijuana issues, but it is silly to think that students don't read this as "Medical" marijuana (air quotes).

This city is WEIRD enough! Voice your concern - call/email the city council.
WAMM provided "its own security", Yeah, like the registered CHILD MOLESTER that was in charge of the children's area last year. Right.
Next they'll have the Hell Angels in charge of security!

Don't give them a smoking exception - instead, let them use vaporizers and showcase more baked goods and similar items. The vaporizers work well for a public location.
THC can be infused into any oily or buttery food and drink - the only issue there is dose control and potency.
