"A day after Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger ordered the layoffs of more than 10,000 state employees, officials said they expect that state facilities such as Department of Motor Vehicle offices, parks and beaches will stay open - but the lines could be longer and the service worse. "

Anyone remember the old Sears catalog? They had certain products at different prices on a page, labeled "Good" "Better" "Best". I guess here we at normal operation are at bad. So the choices will now go to worse and perhaps to worst.

I love how they bring up the Department of Motor Vehicles. Just to renew your drivers license now take more than half the day! Why??? because they have 95% totaly inept people working there, which better than 50% are not even capable of speaking basic English! I say this from my own personal experience in May. I was sure I was in a third world country. Then I looked over to where you take the exam and saw two people taking one test! What that all about...maybe an interputer??? That's plan old BS! This state is so top heavy it makes me sick. Tell me why our Senator needs four offices??? And now they tell me the "service will be worst"....joke...it can't be worst. And this is what my taxes go for? I'd rather stop paying and wait for them to find me....with the mess this state is in I'll most likely out live them!

Like everyone, I've dealt with state employees who were super terrific and those who were deadheads.

Once the budget debacle is over, this might be a good time to permanently uninvite all the deadwood employees, something we should do when the elected ones numbers are up.

Maybe if the unions did not opposed the Governor's efforts to reform the budget in his first year in office, this would not have happened. Instead the union fought him so hard that it made him shy away from reform altogether. This is the union's doing. I am a union member and a very action one. But I recognize reasonable reforms when I see them. If you always get extra during good times then you should get reduction during bad times. Everyone has to budget in their household. Why not the Government?

If you want prompt, courteous service at the DMV, go to the Simi Valley office. Very short lines and nice helpful people. I only go there.

The ones hit should be the ones who do the budget--Hit at the top.....
Also the radio and tv last few days say about the long lines at the dmv--
Go to any dmv 1/2 hr before they open and lines around the block...
The radio stations and tv run into the ground and stretch then truth and cause panic
and trouble--They do the same with earthquakes...

""This is crazy," said Veronica Hodges, a Van Nuys resident, as she tried to calm her 1-year-old who was crying in a stroller as her other three children played nearby.""

What the hell? Get a babysitter lady!! They should have kicked her out and told her to come back minus the kids. And DMV is right, more people need to use the online services instead of wasting time at the DMV offices.

The unions don't like the governor making moves wtihout their stamp of approval. My guess is they're telling other employees to slow service and call in sick to make the situation appear worse than it really is. Everybody knows the state is overstaffed. Tell some of the managers at DMV to get off their arses and go out and help customers. Shorten their 3 hour lunches to 1 hour. Most state employees are lazy slugs.

""At a time when people are walking away from their homes because they cannot afford to make their mortgage payments or feed their children, these workers deserve the right to go in to work each day and that their wages will be sufficient," Durazo said. "

Translation:
"Don't lay any state union employees off even though we're overstaffed and don't cut our wages even though we're overpaid. Instead, raise taxes on the citizens and take more of their wages because we don't care if they can't make their mortgage payments or feed their children. It's all about US!!!!"

longer lines at the DMV and the dam democrats now want a tax increase. we have a democrat problem everytime you turn around the dam democrats want more of the working class to pay to pay more taxes.puting people out of work is sad and now more long lines at the dmv.if the democrats would stop spending our money maybe we could solve this problem.just think if we could get rid of the democrats we could solve everything

As usual, it seems that things are made to look worse than they really are - in terms of the reductions in pay (tempory, it will be made up later). It is just a matter of timing.
As already noted, the unions must share most of the responsibility. They have consistently killed all attempts at "reform".
The Govenor did what he could to put pressure on the Legislature. However, I hope that those holding out for budget reductions don't give in on this one. Thank you.

Close down the Department of Homeland Security and return the dollars to the taxpayer. Bring the troops home, secure the borders and throw out all the illegals. Set up tent cities for the immigrants as they find home. Fire 3/4's the bureaucrats. No more income tax. Tariffs on all imports to stimulate manufacturing in the states. Legalize all drugs. Now snap your fingers folks, and make it happen.

I was in a DMV in a state in the Midwest a couple of years ago. We registered 2 cars and got 2 drivers licenses and were out of there in 30 minutes. And the people there actually had nice personalities. It was the first time someone smiled and said "Hi, how can I help you". Not only that, but the DMV office has a nice carpet and comfortable chairs. It puts anything we have in California to shame. In most DMV's here, it feels like a jail.

I am tired of seeing the good hard working folks being taken advantage of! Time to cut the salaries of the big fat wasteful cats in the legislator and assembly because they casued this mess. I wish these folks would all do a 24-48 hour walk out! We need to take back our state. We must remember all these folks come election day!

What needs to be done is to make it easier to fire deadbeats who don't have the customer service skills or the knowledge to do their jobs (any govt job will do and should be done - state, county, city) - we need to keep the hardworking ones with the good personalities and the ones who give good customer service. Aside from that, the ones who shouldn't be paid (even loans) are state legistlators who can't get a budget together. We are spending 22 billion or close to it on services for illegals. In LA County per Mike Antonvich about l billion. Need I say more. The Dept of Homeland Security had been created because of the FBI and CIA didn't talk to each other because both were created in the old days to do different things. We don't need another bureacracy but we do need to secure our borders on all sides. Maybe CA has to get a lot worse before getting better because we're headed down the road to you know what.

The biased press do not reveal that irrefutable fact why, California is having a $17.5 budget meltdown. Nobody wants to talk about the $11 billion dollars, supporting state welfare programs for the millions of illegal immigrants squatting in this states. Just as Los Angeles county, San Francisco is part of the abhorrent 'Sanctuary City' mentality, so is the state itself. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. is scared to touch the festering issue, along with the pathetic city administrators. The majority can be attributed to the liberal Democratic state assembly who have used their position, to appease big business.
Illegal immigration has depressed wages, because predatory employers are hiring illegal cheap labor and ignoring citizens and legal residents. Both McCain and Obama just don't get it, that 80 percent of the American people are furious with supporting the 12 to 30 million illegal aliens who have invaded this sovereign country. The cost is astronomical according to (www.eagleforum.org/sources) Read unsuppressed facts at NUMBERSUSA.

As an American patriot and a Independent (populist) I have just donated $50.00 to judicial watch. Even $10.00 will help. They are a non-profit law group Promoting Integrity, Transparency and Accountability in Government, Politics and the Law. The 9th District Court is a liberal-socialist, anti-sovereignty, pro-illegal immigration group of judges, who interprets the law from the bench. They undermined Californians Proposition 187, that would have terminated $billions of dollars in welfare benefits to illegal immigrants. I totally agree with you. Welfare is one of the root problems that face this state. We are cutting everything in this state. But not one person in Sacramento has said that we need to cut welfare.
