maybe if his family had watched this kid more closely he would not have been in so much trouble and they would have known what he was doing

Having more officers on duty would only be a temporary solution and would do nothing to curb the violence in the long run.

Parents should be responsible and accountable for raising their kids. They need to communicate with their kids more, and ask where they are going, who they are with and what they are going to do. Obviously this is not happening if 20 wanna-be gansters meet to prove that they are tough. I am sure most of these kid's parents had no idea where their kids were when this stabbing took place.
Gang violence is a thorn in the side in Santa Barbara and even more to its Latin-American community. It's not the fault of the police, or schools. Change should start with parents and their failure to communicate.

One more baby lost. When will it end. We are losing our children at a rate that is unheard of. Where do you place the blame? Parents, one head of household parent, lack of jobs, schools not teaching updated information, old values that are not understood by our youth today, what? What is it? Stop spending money on useless wars. Stop rasing rents. Stop the gas prices from go through the roof. Start taking care of OUR kids in America.

The city leaders need to round up all the gang members and have them work together on some project such as repainting some senior's home or the like. This should break down some or all the perceived barriers.

Bottom line; there's one less scumbag. He was going down the wrong road anyway. It alway starts by being an associate. He was one.
The kids that ran away because they didn't want to fight, payed later. The runners got beat up by their own gangs for NOT fighting. The only ones to blame are the ones making the poor choices and not thinking about the outcomes of those choices. Parents, you can help with this.

It's a lovely thought 20-20 but I don't know how tangible and real that is. I used to work (until last year) on the corner of Chapala and Ortega right across from the Volkswagen dealership. I can count many times that the young teen gang bangers would get into it on that corner or just near State Street. A couple of times, it was harmless yelling, then it evolved to fighting in the middle of Ortega Street, then according to one VW employee I talked to.... one banger ran into his service garage and began rifling through his tool box to grab a screwdriver. Luckily the head of the service department saw this and yelled at the kid. Who knows what he would have done if he managed to get that screwdriver. Somehow I don't think he was planning on helping his madre assemble a cabinet from Ikea.

These kids seemingly have no parental involvement in their lives. Probably no one to kick their a$$ for purusing a life in the gang. Peer pressure is bad enough when you're that young. Something has to be done.... but I really think the parents have lost control. I probably shouldn't say "parents" because that usually denots (2).... and I'll be most of these kids are from a one parent family.

The day after a large fight on Ortega Street, I called the police to inform them they might want to increase the patrols in the area. They were very aware of the problem, but the common thread is these flare-ups happen when the junior high has a half-day. When kids get out of school early, things start to happen.

It's not about keeping them busy, but keeping their parent(s) involved. I think too many parent(s) rely on the probation officer to be the surrogate parent. In a way, I think boarding schools or military academy are the perfect fit for re-directing these idle hands. If nothing is done, they'll continue to kill each other and un-fortunately innocent people as well that happen to be in the way.

I happened to know the boy that got murdered and his family they were/are all great people!!!! They are not thugs and the boy was not a gangster. He was a great boy. The boy that stabbed him should go to jail.
