I have note ever understood why the government does not care as much about education as they care about war. The government is spending 720 million dollars a day in the war with Iraq. Why? If this continues what will happen to children, the future of tomorrow. My younger sister is a PUSD student. This really worries me because not only my sister’s education is in danger but also the education of many other children. Now children have to be placed in rooms with many other children. Approximately forty percent of these students are English learners. This signifies that these students need more one on one attention to acquire the language. Teachers metaphorically burn their eyelids studying become a teacher, now they are laid off this easily. I am sure there are other ways to solve this problem without having to affect students and teachers.

Hopefully, half of the pink slips are in spanish or the employees won't know they have received a layoff notice. By the way, do employees still get lottery bonus checks?
Actually, they were in English, and I believe that most of us got the gist of the letters, that we are in danger of losing our jobs, our homes, and our security. We are your neighbors; we pay taxes and support our community; and, yes, some of us have achieved -- gasp -- skills in more than one language. For example, I happen to know that English and Spanish, as names of languages, are capitalized in English, but not in Spanish.
In response to your question, which, regretfully, appeared mean-spirited as your comment, the last lottery check that was disbursed to teachers was in 1994 or 1995. You can't blame the present crisis on checks to the teachers.
However, as someone else pointed out, PUSD is one of the largest owners of real estate in Pomona. Is it possible that what is wrong in Pomona is not the language and ethnicity of the teachers, but the leadership?

I think it's a shame that we are the only country in the modern world that doesn't value being multilingual. Our counterparts in Europe commonly speak several languages, and we seem to have this phobia about dealing with other languages in this country. Its great that Spanish speakers can learn English, and it would be great if all of our English speaking kids could learn Spanish at an early age when it comes natural to them. Maybe if more of our teachers were bilingual, our kids could all learn multiple languages from the time they were in elementary school, and would become world class citizens of the planet! Sometimes people are so narrow minded.

This all could have been avoided with transparent over-site of the district budget and school board members actions. The school board authorized and purchased land for $14 million dollars in January 08. Why? Two weeks later they called an emergency meeting to say the district was now "experiencing" a $14 million dollar budget short fall. This is a prime example of the type of gross mismanagement and fraud that is now seriously impacting students in their programming and teachers and support staff in the lost of their jobs.
The school board members, superintendent, and top administrators of the district are being disengenuious when they say to the public they care about the students, parents, teachers and support staff. If they really cared they would not make sweetheart deals with so-called friends of the districts. The Pomona Unified School District does not have a funding problem it has a leadership problem. The fraud continues from the E-Rate program and they have not reformed their ways of defrauding the public.
The time has come for the Teachers Union to join the effort to reform and remove this board and other administrators who continue to mismanagement the district. Your union members rely on you protect their interest and going to get along with corrupt management has ended in disaster for large amount of your membership.
The teachers and support work hard at their duties and responsibilities each day. They above and beyond the call of duty to provide support and yes supplies for our children. They have nothing to do with mistakes at the district and now they must bear the brunt , it is not fair. Our children will suffer more with their departure.
AMEN to THAT, brother!

That would be Spanish (capital S) and by the way........teachers ARE PROFICIENT in English......they are required to pass the CBEST (English AND Math Skills).

I happen to be born HERE, from a non Spanish-speaking family and AM bilingual. For that God-given gift, my life has been RICHER!

I taught over ten years. What a waste of time. Eve here is going to teach you too Bob " a thing or two" then discipline you because your not up to her standards. She's never had a real job, just sat in the pasture with the other cash cows. If you think she can separate actual from factual, be real careful., she will suck you into her abyss. Can't seem to comprehend doing anything else, particularly a real job. She's just got an answer to it all... You ever look at and discuss something with a kid these days, they're spun due to the poison given them from our liberal teachers. I hope they all get fired !
That would be YOU ARE again! And OH, I am not a LIBERAL! Some of us teachers ARE Republicans!

My mother has worked hard for PSUD for seven years, not as long as some, I know. But she is really dedicated to helping the kids learn, and she wants them to enjoy learning. Teaching has to be one of the hardest jobs out there. The kids don't just sit down and listen. There are really hard children that disrupt learning, and the teachers have to deal with. My mother stays late after school, works on lesson plans and report cards and such late into the night and on weekends. She somehow manages to get high test scores out of her students, I was shocked when she received a pink slip. It's really scary. My support goes out to all PUSD teachers

If you live in Pomona it doesn't matter who will teach your children, your children probably don't speak English.
Pomona is a melting pot of people and should not be characterized this way. I grew up in Burbank, went to BHS and raised my family here in Pomona. Here in Phillips Ranch and in many other parts of Pomona it's a melting pot, which is beautiful. It is artful and genuine. Generalizing comments such as the one above only serve to foster ire, we don't need that! noone does. The lady that made the original comment was genuinely concerned about a mass departure of teachers. Your comment reveals how much you actually DON'T know about Pomona, and has no relevance to her concern about teacher departure and concern for children. One of the problems facing our culture is this propensity for non-affiliation. When we hear concern, fear etc., we have a tendency to castigate, to ridicule instead of listen, affiliate and help. Please don't be part of this problem. Topix is a forum for people to come together, to talk, to foster community.

Daily Horoscope for June 2

Capricorn

You feel like overindulging yourself in some way today, and why not? Throw caution to the wind and eat your way through a big bar of chocolate, or have a retail therapy session that leaves you reeling from the amount of money you've spent. There's a definite chance you could get carried away and tell a whopper of a story that has little resemblance to what really happened. What on earth has got into you?
