California To Withhold A Bigger Chunk Of Paychecks

Is this legal? I am surprised no comments on this so far. Very concerning to me!

just filled out a new W-4 form. claiming all I can. If I have to pay, they will get it on 4/15/09

Yes it is legal, because they enacted it. It is supposed to get money that the state needs into its hands sooner. The bottom line on what you will owe next April does not change, so the amount you need to send them after your withholding is accounted for, might be less than what you are used to.

The Federal Government is doing its thing just the opposite of what the State is doing--lessoning the withholding so that we have more in our pockets now. There too, the bottom line on the tax form won't change, and you might own more out of your pocket, after withholding than usual. To me, this is more worrisome than the State's actions, because if withholding and estimated tax payments don't total the threshold set by the IRS, there can be penalties for that.

Another example of the government "helping" the litte guys!

Why don't they just take the amount they spend on public education, subtract 25% off it and send out vouchers to all the parents so they can send their kids to whichever private school they want to. The kids will get better educations, the state will be in the black, and they can sell off the public schools and make a fortune on the back end. Problem solved.

Oh that's right... how can they indoctrinate them to be atheist evolutionary animals who do drugs, engage in sexual immorality and homosexuality, crime, and join gangs. I almost forgot. What was I thinking?
