This is a good article on Cabbage Key and surrounding area. My mother was born on Cayo Costa in 1913 (95 yrs old now), and as a child lived in a cabbage palm thatched "house" with dirt floors. Her father and grandfather fished for a living, and the start of 5 generations in our family.

I did everything from mowing, to burning the garbage in the deep pit near the water tank, keeping the diesel generator fueled and operating, cleaning cabins........you name it, all for $1 per hour. I was only 16 years old and I was right where I wanted to be. I would stay on the island during the week and return home to Boca Grande in the 30 ft launch on the weekends. Cabbage Key was, at that time, a very special place but unfortunately it has changed and now only seems special and idyllic to relative newcomers and transplants who don't know any better and who have fallen into the "Tropical B/S" promoted by the snake oil selling, carpetbagging, big phony "pirate" named Buffett. I knew Cabbage Key when that moron was still a teenager living in an Alabama trailer park and it is indeed a shame that he spread his filfthy soilage on Cabbage Key. I always thought it would be nice if someone with TALENT could have been associated with the island........say John Lennon writing A Day In The Life there but instead it has been saddled with the shame of supposedly having that worm Buffett be inspired to write a piece of garbage about a cheezeburger. What a shame! Finally someone else that agrees with me that Buffett is a maggot.
