UF will cut jobs, slash enrollment
Gaining admission to the University of Florida will become even harder as it slashes undergraduate enrollment by 4,000 students, lays off 138 faculty and staff members, and eliminates some courses and degree ...

Between a Florida Pre-Paid student and a foreign, full -tuition paying student with similar credentials, who do you think is going to get accepted?
|
|
Priority should be instate and then out of state and then MAYBE foreign students. That could alleviate some of the reduction of students. Let the foreign students fend for themselves and put our in state students first.

GOOD! I hope those of you shortsighted tax cut voters who were hoping your high school graduates would get into UF, now CAN'T!
You got what you asked for. Spend that $200 on gas to drive your kid to the local community colleges to apply. |

In a perfectly fair and just world were money and funding is abundant a FL Pre-paid student would (maybe) have an advantage. But right now money and funding is NOT abundant and, if you haven't notice so far, this is not a perfectly fair and just world. Plus, the survival of the education system takes precedent over "just and fair" issues regarding any particular student. "This are the times that try men's souls" |

The first sentence of this article says gaining admissions at UF will become harder. Not if you're from a wealthy, politically connected family!
Last month, UF Medical School admitted a student without an MCAT score. How hard can it be to get into med school at UF if you don't even need to take the MCAT???? http://www.gainesville.com/article/20080418/N... |

At least they'll still be keeping Florida Senator Mikey Haridopolos on their payroll at $75k per year to line up internships.

Well, with all the morons getting into colleges because of their "mommy and daddy" connections, I don't necessarily agree with you. A local idiot lawyer who is on t.v. ALL the time had a son with a D average get into UF since he donated a large sum of money to get into the school. |

education should be a state priority.

The next two things on the agenda if we are to continue down our socialist path, is free medical for all and free college for all. There are other nations in the world that offer these "rights".

Please connect the dots for me on how amendment 1 did anything like you say. |

My thoughts exactly. I'm sure Bernie isn't take a pay cut either. I love my alma mater and all, but I'm not so blinded to think there aren't some inequities going on up there.

I think you should verify and publicly disclose your "source" to prove that this happened. I happen to work closely with the alumni association and we get phone calls all the time of rich donors upset that their kid didn't get in. There was even a local meeting within a couple weeks for "legacy" kids, and even they are whining that being a legacy means nothing anymore unless you have the grades to compete.
On yet another note, just because one student has a 4.5 weighted GPA and a 1550 SAT score does not mean s/he will be a better college student or end up more successful. Perhaps this D student you claim to know of had other things going for him, if your story is even plausible.

I guess there will be a fall on self-entitled yuppie exports in the next four years.

I did disclose my source - see the link below. UF admits politically connected students (and professors) even if they are unqualified (no MCAT test.) http://www.gainesville.com/article/20080418/N... |

---------- I know MANY countries offering free health insurance for everyone and free college tutition. It's very funny to say that all these countries are socialist. I think there is rathere some problems with an "American" egoistic and very selfish way of thinking and way of life! |

Actually... The money a university gets per student depends on the *type* of student enrolled. From highest to lowest amount: freshmen, AA degree holders from a public FL community college, transfers from other in-state public colleges, out-of-state transfers. So really, it's to a school's advantage to admit the FL student first, because in the long run, they'll get more money. |
|
|
The "D" average is probably exaggerated, but I do know several people who graduated with poor grades but were accepted as undergrads and grad students because of their parents money.

Half of students drop out ,they just want to party they should get rid of the slackers.

Very on point! |

Sorry, I should add that private school in-state transfers are between the last 2 categories.
