Those high speed chases are so dangerous. The helicopter should have taken over pursuit. I guess , from the report, the police cruiser did back off. There are so many innocent lives at stake, it hardly seems worth it to continue a high speed pursuit.

If the purpose of law enforcement is to protect the public, why put everyone at risk to apprehend a motorist suspected of some crime, sometimes it is just an irrational reaction to being stopped.

Those highway pursuits are deadly on many occasions.

It's on TV all the time, careening out of control vehicles, common sense has to take over sometime.

Everyday, we hear about cops killing more people. Either it's shooting some kid in the back because he is shoplifting from Walmart. Or it's a high speed chase (usually over some minor traffic incident) that ends in death and destruction.
We need less cops in our society. It would make for a safer nation.
What we really need are fewer irresponsible criminals that break the law, regardless of the severity of the law broken, and stop running from the police. Each time the police stop following, chasing or otherwise attempting to stop the law breaker, it encourages the law breaker to run each time they commit other crimes. Had they just shot and killed your loved one and the police let them go because they were speeding and driving dangerously, I don't think you would have the same thoughts. Deadly force should be used rather than chasing since the automobile can be considered a weapon. Knowing they can be shot and killed might stop the running.

What "high speed" pursuit? The article clearly (at least the one I read) states that the officer recognized the vehicle and began following-without lights - without siren. The officer called for helicopter and when it arrived, he STOPPED FOLLOWING!!!

The guilty party fled - without being pursued!- the video from the helicopter showed (again from the article I read) that the vehicle which crashed was driving without lights!

Now - remember that the Orlando Sleeping Sentinel loves to update the article without bothering to reset the comments. So it is possible the article will change and my comments may not apply anymore!

A cautionary tale: Darwin was right! Four adults failed to discourage the chucklehead driver from firstly, running from the cops and subsequently, racing at high speed into a parked TRAIN. Physics?!? Who knew?

The article clearly shows that there was no high-speed chase. They crashed into the train because they were driving without headlights. Read the article before you make a post.

The driver could have pulled over and abided by the law. It was a simple choice that had horrendous consequenses. Are we teaching our kids how to make the right choices by removing the consequeses?
I agree

Would love to know more about all of this. Was this a family drug party? Or was it a kid who was hiding his drug stuff in the S.U.V. and ran from the police without regard for his father and others in the vehicle? Was this a vehicle full of hysterical people trying to stop the kid or telling him to go faster without lights? I look forward to an update on who these people are and their relationships.

Eitehr way, you play with fire you get burned ...or hit a train.

Amen, FMC! Note that the unfortunates were reportedly driving with their lights off. May be why they didn't see the parked train? Thank God no one else was on the road near these idiots. Individuals who ignore/incite armed authority are acting in a irrationally. Because their behavior cannot be trusted or predicted, public safety should be the first concern.

Did you even read the article??? Are you one of those boneheads that blame everyone and everything else??? This personal responsibility of these young drug crazed individuals ended with 5 lives destroyed. They made the choice and paid the price. The officer involved is no more at fault than the train!
Wake up and see who is to blame! The people doing the crime!!!!!!!!!!

Well, we're all entitled to our opinion; however, I'm more than willing to bet that if you or anyone you love gets in trouble that you'll be calling those cops you seem to hate so much to help you out. I doubt seriously if you call your local crackheads you'll get much in the way of assistance. As for the people who slammed into the truck; I'm sure we'll see their families on the 6:00 news tonight, saying how wonderful they were, what model citizens, how generous to their friends, and so on, and how if the big bad police weren't chasin them, they'd still be alive today, etc. etc.(their families won't say a WORD about the crack, though)

Your right common sense needs to take over.
Common sense. Run from the Police.
10 years.
Run from the Police and hurt someone.
25 years.
Run from the Police and seriously hurt someone or kill someone.
Life with no parole.

At least with this crash no innocent people were killed.
Anybody remember the kid in Crime Hills who ran a red light killing that family?
I do.
Life no parole.
