Ceremony honors dockworkers killed on job

It never has been satisfactorily explained why a 73 year old man was working on the docks? This fellow should have never been within ear shot of HARD, manual labor on a dock! The ILWU macho, ego driven logic rings hollow now that this guy is DEAD!

The fault lays with the mental midgets of the union who probably would NOT offend this guy and tell him, ya know ya really SHOULDN'T be working at your age!

What ever happened to retirement or working an easier less dangerous job?

As you know the retirement age is continuously increasing! His entire life was probably centered around his job where all of his contacts and friends are. Sadly but true in this industry those who have worked 40-45 years on the docks don't live too long after retirement. There have been several guys who have died before receiving their first retirement check. A lot of these guys started at 18 years old, and although they may have the qualified years to retire they don't meet the age requirement. In Carlos's case he loved his job, not so much for the money but for the camaraderie. Just as the teacher who taught until age 95 and the nurse who continued to work past 80, or the 85 year old who insist on driving themselves around. I agree once a person start losing their sense's they should retire as they most likely become dangers to themselves and others. I believe Carlos had all of his sense's this was just another unfortunate accident that was probably cause by complacency.

Oh, Please, these guys make fantastic money and don't even have to have any sort of education to obtain it, just a relative already in the union. Cry me a river!

Maybe we could also have a well-attended public ceremony for the young woman who recently lost her life when her big rig crashed on the 405/710 interchange to remember her and the 500+ truck drivers who die on the job each year.
