Too bad they didn't bother listing very many from Alamo in the credits. That was a real disappointment.

I didn't see any mention about any monetary gain to the military and local area. Was all this a freeby?

Alamo Senior,
Other than the military members that took leave to become part of the "PAID CAST" the USAF did not get any $$$ for allowing the movie to be filmed on location at Holloman. They believe that the movie will draw members into the armed forces when they see the characters shown in a positive role.. I am not sure if they re-embursed fuel costs, but I am fairly confident that they did not pay "rent" for the base... Not sure about Tullarosa, Mescelaro, or other "local" areas.. |

It's the base that keeps the community afloat, so they should get the recognition !!!!!!

QOF,
PLEASE do not take this wrong, but you seem to have quite a bit if animosity towards the base and it's "percieved" contribution to the local community. In my current position, I oversee a contract worth over 4.2MILLION a year that is ENTIRELY civillian operated. That's just 1 sample contract for aircraft maintenance. I can't begin to estimate the payroll for Civil Engerneering or Force Support, all of which have very large civillian payrolls. Payrolls that easily rise into the multi-millions per year.... While I do not believe that Holloman is the sole "keeper" of the local economy, it does contribute is a LARGE way. I am sorry that a few professionals of your acquaintenance were passed over. The military "machine" can sometimes favor those less qualified in job but more familiary in basic operating procedures. It's not my policy... I perfer to hire the MOST qualified, without any pre-concieved standards.... Just adding my 2 cents though |

What he meant by Hollomann keeping Alamo afloat is that if the base closed Alamo would become a ghost town overnight. If you dont realize this then you need to get off the drugs! |

The only "animosity" is the constant lie how Alamogordo would die without the base. Or how much Alamogordo depends on the base. With never any mention of how much the military NEEDS Alamogordo!!! From what you mentioned the base needs the people equally if not more than Alamogordo needs the base. I tire of hearing how much the base does this or that when it is an equal partnership. Why it cannot be treated like an equal mutual beneficial partnership instead of a superficial myth designed to make the citizens feel inferior and indebted for your gracious presence. Believe it or not without bases close and the towns they were in do not die, they go on and often grow. |

Well i for one am certainly glad that alamo provides so much for the base. What would i do without wal mart and the million fast food resturaunts downtown. Name one industry or company that would support this town and be able to replace the close to 500 million the base plugs into this towns economy on an annual basis. No the town would not dry up or go away but it would be hurt humbled and very hard for it to recover quickly if the base decided to pack it in.
Ohh and by the way you can thank the base for leting them film here as i am sure that helped plug yet more money into the local economy.

Yeah like Roswell..lol |

The Roswell wasnt nearly as intrigal as Hollomann is to Alamogordo. Also Roswell has other industries to support it. Oil being one and there is also a prison south of Roswell. How about all the farming in the area. Alamogordo has no such industry! You can mark it down the day Hollomann closes is the very day Alamo begins to die. |

Thank-you for this posting, it seems QOF is only interested in what rocks her world. The base is the life blood of my families earnings, and at this stage of my life Walmart isn't exactly on my list of job opportunities! I moved to Alamo for my current job, love the community, love the base and love my job! Just my 2 cents. |

so is it true some of transformers was filmed in ruidoso?? one of the fight scenes looked fairly similar to the hardwood trees in that area. i wonder where the big stars stayed while they were filming in town? i know bay flew his gV into holloman, it had a decepticon symbol on the rudder, it was way cool!

You know the base is not the only entity that gives veterans preference. Look at the USA jobs website and almost all are this way, or they give preference to folks already in Civil Service. I don't like it either, but that's the way it is. If you want another example, try getting a job on the reservation and see if you don't run into the same thing with Native American preference.
As for the base getting all the credit in the story, maybe you all didn't notice that the story came out of Holloman by a Holloman reporter. Maybe she didn't have contacts to put out the local info. |

QoF it is hard to imagine you being more wrongheaded on any issue, and that is going some.
HAFB is pretty much stand alone in all aspects of military functions, like almost all such facilities around the country. Alamogordo is starting to grow and continues to prosper primarily because of the Base there is no denying this reality. At some point, if Alamogordo grows large enough, the Base would not be so important, but right now Holloman is our life blood without which we would wither considerably.

I wonder why everyone is knocking Holloman. Yeah, you may not have a job on the base but a lot of others do and have for years. Holloman has always been good for Alamo no matter what anybody says. Plus, it's been here longer, a lot longer than most of you people that complain about it. This is a nice lil' town to raise kids in and retire in. A lot of jobs in town are employeed by people that have lived here for years. If you don't know someone in the business...then you don't normally get hired. Or on the sad side of it...if someone passes away then a position opens up. But again, if you don't know someone, more than likely you won't get picked for the position. That's just my opinion because I've tired getting those jobs and found out that someone knew someone and they got the job.
I think everyone should just enjoy living in this area and keep a positive atitude about our town and surrounding area. |

otero county is a false economy anyway. its all lies and money is laundered non stop. base or not, it wouldbe jacked, base helps in a way but most military here i notice shop online or go to el paso or cruces. so wheres the help? then alamogordo, and other entities give freebies to the movie industry, have anything to do with city hall/commission/committee of 50 having family or involvement with the nm film industry, idk most likely.

Glad to see someone can actually read. Unlike QoF who is busy complaining about Holloman and the men and women serving our country. The story came out of the Public Affairs Office at Holloman. If the city wanted any credit maybe the Chamber director should have released something. Rather than just taking up space in an air-conditioned office. |

QoF, Maybe you should spend more time off the computer and learn more about how much Holloman really brings to the local community. Yes the two communities work together on many aspects, but without Holloman, Alamogordo would dry up. Been there done that, many smaller towns with bases in them that had closed dried up and went away. Take a look at Oscoda, Michigan. When Wurtsmith AFB was there, it was a thriving town. When it closed int he early 90's it fell off the map, until about 3-4 years ago, when it finally started to rebuild after the loss of the AFB. Also, if you spent al little more time off this computer site and used your "experiance" you may even get a one of those "little" civilian jobs you really like to talk bad about many times.

Okay this has gotten just too hysterical. Now people think I would want one of those civilian jobs on the base. I guess if I had ever wanted one the base would have my resume on file but guess what? They don't! We have never had the desire nor neccessasity to bid jobs on the base. Nope the base has to go to El Paso to get the work done we provide. As long as there is this air of superiority instead of MUTUAL respect I refuse to even look for contracts out to bid on the base. We provide a service and a darn good one. I refuse to bid any business/government who would think they are doing us a favor instead of us doing our job to provide the service they NEED.
While it was the base who provided the press release mentioning in one sentence the other areas in the county the movie was filmed would have been the right thing. Especially if the rumors are true on how much they do for the local area. Surely one sentence would not be too much trouble especially if you hope to do something for the community around you by drawing more crews like that here, right? BTW I am curious I heard the base was supposed to put on a fantastic fire works display for the citizens of Alamogordo, right? Pretty cool they would do this for the people in the community they support, who would die for them. Oh wait I think I may be mistaken. |
