The police should protect the city, not try to get more cash to protect the city. Maybe if they would walk the neighborhoods instead of just driving around the city would be a little safer.

The real story here is the comments that have emmenated from Councilman Adams' escrow business: - Monrovia police officers are lazy - They're underworked security guards, worth about $15/hour - They harrass people and write bogus tickets - They use their guns to get money from people -The last MPD officer to be injured on the job was hurt because he ate too many donuts at once.(Actually, Sergeant Verna was shot in the face on March 30).
Councilman Adams has not disassociated himself from the comments, nor decried them. Because, the bottom line is, Adams, like much of the council, fundamentally disrespects the work of police officers.

POT: MPD has about one officer on duty for every 5000 residents at any given time (plus or minus). How long do you want them to walk to get to your call?
I agree footbeats are ideal, but they are not going to be the MPD reality any time soon.

I agree the MPOA.(I'm a L A Sheriff's Dept. employee.) Unlike the sheriff's department, the union is not pressing a "blue flu" which wasn't very productive and created a lot of hostility within the department and against LASD and county supervisors and contract cities. I'm glad the MPOA is still patrolling and line officers don't have to worry about getting bad looks or negative assignments from supervisors due to "calling in sick" and also creating overtime for officers to fill their vacancies.(Now we know there are to be no reprisals from supervisors for job actions but that still occurs.) Some of us like picking up a little (ok, a lot of) overtime, but I can't look at my partners in the face knowing I called in feigning illness and they were force to cancel plans, time with their families or just relaxing because I called in with the flu. Perhaps (unlike the sheriff's dept.) now the community will rally around the officers so the city council will bleed some unused slush fund to give those underpaid and overworked officers what is deserved to them. I think if you're not going to apply to be a law enforcement officer, get involved with them as a volunteer or even go on a ride along and see what they go through and you'll see they deserve more. I'm sure if it was the fire department, they could ask for 23% and get 29% and a smile. Everyone love a fireman, no one likes the police...

I find it appalling that Police Officers put their life on the line every day and they are treated this way. I think Councilman Adams should resign immediately if in fact he supports such nonsense.

I agree...because as much as I know they would "give priority" to calls for service to his residence or business, they will remain professional.

What in the world are the police going to do when all of the residents begin to move out of Monrovia? Is this the solution. Do you want to live in an area where the police actively say beware this city is unsafe? If this group is so ignorant that they think that this is a constructive way in which to handle this situation then I clearly understand their predicament. The quality, ethics and standards of these individuals is less than average.

Are police offiers perfect,no they are not,but come on people give me a break. Are you going to put your life on the line for a stranger? What's your life worth? It's easy to condem the P.D. afer all, all they do is eat donuts right? next time someone needs a officer/call the councilman and see what he can do for you. let him ride around a night and see if someone might shoot at him or do worse. These officers deserve every penny they get and if this is the only way left for them to get attention, so be it. Stop your crying and support them, after all who else is going to help you in the middle of the night when danger strikes!

public safety must be a priority in the community. that means paying off their public employees reasonably. the city does not want to invest in public safety so they can fund other meaningless projects. without a strong police force there goes the neighborhood. as we have seen throughout the year there will be more crime. who wants to wear a uniform with a gun and badge if they are not compensated fairly and do not have support from their own city government? nobody. i strongly support the union tactics. the only people here crying wolf is business owners who live in the city. they should blame the city government rather than the union. the union is protecting their officers and most importantly the residents in the community. the city government and local business owners ought to be ashamed of themselves. they only care about money and how it could benefit themselves instead of benifiting the community which is protecting its very own residents.

What a poorly written and one side article. I guess the best way I can support the paper is to buy a parakeet, it seems the paper is good for little else.

I think the MPOA has jumped the shark on this one. What's the first thing you think of when you read "Rising crime rates"? It sure isn't "The police need more money!", it's more like "ineffectual police work".
I've taken my support signs down.
