Overthrow on San Anselmo Town Council met with a yawn, shrug

Full story: Marin Independent Journal

San Anselmo voters tossed out the Town Council majority this week in a sweeping overthrow that may be unprecedented in town, but over at the San Anselmo Barber Shop there was barely a buzz.

You crack me up Brent. The fact that the 'paper' you write for backed all three losing incumbents was as big a surprise as the fact that you then follow up that brilliance with this article that essentially says 'who cares about what the people of San Anselmo wanted. No one really voted anyway...'. Take the loss a little bit better.

"SA for life", or somebody, could you tell us "why" this result was obtained? It seems there must have been an issue or two bubbling under the surface that the IJ is missing....

This wasn't on the editorial page, and I didn't see any opinion expressed by the writer, so why are you pointing a finger at him?. Yes, the I-J endorsed the incumbents and went 0-for-3. But this follow-up story didn't come across as a do-over for that endorsement fiasco.

RATIONAL APPROACH WANTS TO KNOW WHY THIS ELECTION RESULT HAPPENED. THE ISSUE THAT WAS BUBBLING UNDER THE SURFACE WAS THAT PETER BREEN HAD TOO MUCH PERSONALITY AND BOTH TED FREEMAN AND JUDY HOUSE DIDN'T HAVE ENOUGH. ALL THREE PEOPLE VOTED IN ARE BETTER POLITICIANS BECAUSE THEY WILL LISTEN AND ENGAGE THE CONSTITUENTS WITHOUT BULLYING PEOPLE LIKE BREEN DID.

I think that there was a general dissatisfaction with the Council's attitude. I've always felt like that council had its mind made up on issues before anybody came in the room. Furthermore, town government overall tends to be hostile to its constituents, and the local police force isn't much better.

The winners all campaigned effectively. I give them a lot of credit and wish them luck.

They receive federal funds to provide sec. 8 housing, and then systematically neglect those very funded properties. Those properties become "islands of crime". I live in SR bu know a vet in SA...and I know that what is alledged here is true. The police do not encourage community policing at all, in fact, they discourage it by threatening prosecution if they think you are "meddling" in their business.
They really do act like thugs....event the new women police do it.There is no question that this disrespectful attitude is coming from the top down.
Maybe Kay can kick a backsides for a change.

Yeah? Just try to get them to work....see what they really do. They will turn on you in a half second if they think you are 1. no rich or 2. disabled. Not one of these SA cops would have been hired in 1975...not one. The standards have gone the same direction as the value of the dollar....straight down. To be disabled in San Anselmo, is to feel the constant threat of incarceration...simply because of a pd that is quite good at the old "whoopsie". The old "whoopsie" can land you in jail. Then, you, who live on 585 a month because you are disabled...must find a way OUT. The public pretender makes a deal with the prosecutor...and you wind up being a slave to the county...working for free to "clear your name". Again...this starts with YOU calling for help....and ends with YOU going to jail on whatever charges the cop decides he can mock up. Maybe the cop will use a stooge or two...some druggie he has stepped on in the past ...who he knows will be a "good cookie". There are many a victim of this cop terror who, rather than CONFRONT this indignity will choose to JOIN the endeavor so as to get a future....favor. Like maybe selling drugs and the cop looks the other way.....
Right here in San Anselmo. I have often wondered, given the obvious drug activity that goes on on th 700 block of SIR FRANCIS DRAKE BLVD., whether the pd have been paid off.
But, in the police departments defense I will say this. I never see hookers on SFD anymore......and I MISS "EM!!!

Why make a big deal? When people get laid-off in the corporate arena the survivors just move on. Unfortunately, some people lose their jobs (dead wood or whatever) and we've become apathetic. oh well. We still have to move forward or get laid-off too!

Yawn and Shrug?

A yawn means the constituents are inhaling air into their lungs, preparing for free speech participation and effective debate with their council.
The shrug is to relaxe the tension and generate flexibility and resiliance to the muscles that will ready the constituent for all upcoming fights for community vs political/vested interests.

A Yawn and Shrug is no better way to start the council season.

Yes, the SA PD is obnoxious. My 12 y.o. helmet-wearing, safe biking daughter was almost run over -- after stopping and signaling her turn onto Shady Lane -- because a SPEEDING 'tough gal' officer wasn't paying attention. Then she pulled my daughter over, told her that 'she could get a big ticket for not stopping (!!!) but that 'this time she would let her off.'

Seriously. What a piece of work.

There are many cyclist who blow thru the stops -- not even pausing -- that are much more worth harassing.

If harass you must...

I complained to the duty officer later that day, but...

Ross PD are the greatest!

The last election proves that San Anselmo politics has gone the way of Chicago and Tammany Hall -- pay to play politicians and developers. Instead of "Boss Tweed" San Anselmo inherited San Francisco hardball politician "Boss Chignell".

No mention of the hotel tax that the local hotel lobbied heavily against. I'm sure that cost a few incumbents their seats.
