Why is it that in a time of economic struggle, the city is trying to make more money off everyday people who are trying to survive. The restrictions placed on us in order to have garage sales are unfair. The $20 fee is excessive as some people may or may not make enough to cover this fee. The majority of us have garage sales to make ends meet. It could be that we need the money to pay our taxes, repair our vehicles or some unexpected home repair, medical bills or medicine or simply to buy groceries.
Why not follow Harlingen's example. Their code is that "no more than 4 garage sales shall be conducted at the same address in any calendar year. No garage sales shall exceed 4 consecutive calendar days in duration, and at leat 5 business days shall elapse between consecutive garage sales.
Garage sale signs are not allowed to be posted on utility poles and traffic signs. All signs used to advertise the garage sale must be removed within 12 hours of completion of the sale. No signs are allowed on City Right-of-Way." This is a lot more beneficial to the people of our city.It seems that the people who made the rules here in San Benito have never had to struggle. I and many others hope this code is changed.
