U.S. reviving '86 amnesty program

Attempts to create an amnesty-with-penalty program may have failed in Washington last year, but the government has been offering a belated pardon to immigrants who tried to qualify for a program two decades ago and were either unfairly turned away or never received an answer.

A lawsuit alleging many unauthorized immigrants were left out of the 1986 amnesty was settled in September, and as a result, the federal government has agreed to dust off old files and take new applications.

I don't have a problem with that.
If they have been here since 1986 AND can prove it. Sure.

I've always said if they've been here since 12/30/95 give them a chance to become legal.

All others need to leave now.

Ok folks let's talk about this.
Isn't this what some of the pros keep talking about?
"some illegals have been here for years, let them stay".
So what do ya think about letting the ones who've been here since say 1995 attain legal status?
illegal is illegal

Totally unfair. They have been here violating the law for a long time. Educating their kids at the taxpayers expense, and most probably abusing the system. They already had the chace to be here for many years, and under no circumstances they should be rewarded. Doesn't matter if they are here for 20 years, ILLEGAL IS ILLEGAL, they BROKE THE LAW, and anyone who brakes one law, can break all of them. All of them should go back to where they came from, and come back if they wish, THE RIGHT WAY, AND THAT IS ABIDEN BY THE LAW.

ok,we have two that are not willing to consider a compromise.

I am an avid anti-illegal and consider the reconquistas my sworn enemy since they promote taking over my country on an ethnic basis.

Many of the reconquistas are dual citizens;what then folks?.

I'd rather give decent folks a chance and jail for sedition the dual citizens/immigrants/illegal invaders which are the ones actually causing all the damage.

i'd have been willing to compromise had they kept their promise after the last "last" amnesty and they could have proven a legitimate need for more workers.with the attempt to force passage of the last bill they chose instead to defy the will of the people, as well as hiding 2nd amendment legislation in in there too. i have no faith in our leaders or their justification for another amnesty for anyone. they obviously can't handle the 2 million legal immigrants and the other million or so guests we allow annually so i'm not budging this time. they need to learn something about dealing in good faith.

Ok. What do we use for limits? Length of stay?
Money earned in that amount of time? Free government resources ($$$) used in that amount of time?
How about making them pay the $$$ back? How much do they pay back? A percentage or all of it?
Do you allow them to pay it over time? How much time do you allow?

Everything wrong with Pelosi. I will absolutely lose all respect for this woman if she gets in the way of law enforcement to do their job and an amensty bill comes into affect allowing people who broke the law by entering this country illegally full citizenship. This would be like spitting in the faces of people who came here abiding by the rules. For those whom gone through the process legally know the struggle one faces.

Illegal is illegal Indy, they all need to go back to their own country an apply like everyone else. One amnesty per 100 years is enough! What's American citizenship worth, wading across a river in the middle of the night? 20 years from now America will have another 12-20 million illegal aliens wanting amnesty!

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi

EDINBURG, Texas (AP)— House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called a plan to build fencing along parts of the Mexico border a "terrible idea" that overlooks local communities.

Pelosi made the comments during her trip to the Rio Grande Valley for the annual Hispanic Engineering, Science & Technology Week conference at the University of Texas-Pan American.

"I have been against the fence, I thought it's a bad idea even when it was just a matter of discussion," said Pelosi, D-Calif. "These are communities where you have a border going through them, they are not communities where you have a fence splitting them."

Last year, President Bush signed the Secure Fence Act requiring the construction of fencing along the 2,000-mile border. The plans call for about 370 miles of fence and 200 miles of vehicle barriers, including concrete barriers, by the end of 2008.

Pelosi also touted legislation known as the DREAM Act that would make it easier for some illegal immigrants to receive higher education benefits. She spoke at a conference that drew more than 5,000 students for activities designed to inspire careers in science and technology.
