Either via History, or Culturally, the USA has used English has been Overwhelmingly the Dominate Language, and new arrivals have adapted and assimilated to it as the Language of the USA.
Having a Multilingual vernacular as you espouse causes many problems and costs. Example- you have 4 Army regiments that need to Communicate - but they each speak a different Language- this causes cohesive problems in a Combat environment, Misinterpretation of Orders, and direct information/communication impossible without interpreters, causing loss of reactive time.It also causes seperation of Units of Soldiers based on Lingual capabilities and would be a de facto "segregation" on this fact alone.Something that precludes Integration , and "turns back the clock" on all the Integration advancements irt did PRIOR to the Civilian Population and Society.
The additional cost of printing everything , and interpreting it , From training manuals,maintenance manuals, Immedite Orders, Standing Orders, Notices etc add additional Costs and time lost.
If nobody is required to do so- this carries over to the Military as well- as it would be Discriminatory to preclude someone from service due to lingual barrier ( as the basis for Military code is the Constitution , and language is without mention in it)
This carries over to Civillian areas as well- in an Emergency situation- say an Auto accident or Child Abduction- consider the consequences of trying to Communicate with someone in a Language that is is Injured - to a resopondant that does not speak the same language- or relay immediate info in the Abduction to lose time and await an Interpreter- time lost is Life lost.
Retaining the Other language - is of Course prefferred, to to exclude the requirement to communicate with the Overwhelming Majority in deference to it is Idiotic.
Learn to Speak, Read and Write English- in order to Communicate with ALL. Retain the Other language for yourself, Culture, and to teach promote such to your Children and interact with Like persons if you wish.

This topic always irratates me when someone complains about "If you live in America you should speak our native language, english" and think this country is being taken over immigrants.

Well lets get the record straight... this nation has already been taken over by immigrants and that was a couple hundred years ago. Unless you are sitting in front of your computer on your reservation then you are not a real Native American, we ran them off THEIR land a couple hundred years ago and took over.

Also, this country was founded by immigrants from not just one country but many, and many of which have their own unique language. The United States has never officially declared a language and that is because we give them the freedom not to have to speak just one language.

So whoever wants to complain about others being unamerican because they aren't speaking english then sit your unamerican ass down because the true american way is freedom, and you want to deny people the foundation of freedom... their 1st amendment rights.

The in essence " freedom " would be to you " freedom to choose anything they like? for example- Multiple marriage? public Nudity? Child mosestation- as those are certainly ( and disgustingly so ) " Freedoms" in the generic sense as you posted-!
That is inane- as there has to be some modicum of ethic, and morality - which WAS and Always HAS been applied to those rights.It iss a matter of common sense to have 1 prinmary , and required languge in a Country in orderfor Allthe citizens etc to be able to communicate effectivle.

,,, American Indians arent "native Americans" they came from somewhere else like everyone else here did,mainly the upper Eurasian countries . I just read about a newer finding to suggest coastal migration as well as "in the middle of the country on foot migrations" as an explanation of how the Inca's and Mayans and the Peruvian indians came to be so far south..Anyway , their DNA comes from alot of countries in Eurasia apparently .. Every so often you will see an article on this .

I wouldn't go to france and expect them to speak english, nor would i go to brazil and expect them to speak polish. It's called a national language for a reason. To all the people who speak spanish feel free to speak it all you want. HOWEVER do not expect my country to conform to you. Go to school and learn english just like every other American is mandated to learn. Do not expect my country to start providing bilingual text on road signs and what not to conform to you the minority.

America is a melting pot of cultures, in order to connect the people who reside in this melting pot fondly called America we must be joined by a common language-ENGLISH! Though it may not be 100% native american it IS what our founding fathers spoke! Therefore making in the USA's founding language.

All people entering this country used to be required to learn English the language of the land. Now if you can't they will help you with the test. What a shame we are dumbing down America to hold the hand of primarily "illegals".
You find most of the people who apply for citizenship can speak English.
The mexicans around Texas speak spanish to their kids and then all Americans have to hire special teachers to teach them English as a second language when they enter the school system slowing all children down. When you come to this great country you need to get in step and stop saying you will speak what ever language you want to because you teach other and your kids it is OK causing untold dollars to the average citizen for printing everything in English and Spanish.
It is not the way my great grand parents started their lives in this greatest nation on earth.
You are in America now speak English or go home, stop slowing Americans down to your speed.

When my ancestors came to the United States, they didn't know English, they had to learn it to survive and make a living. When I lived in Italy I had to learn their language. Our language is English, not Spanish, Korean, German, etc. Bottom line, if you are going to live in a country learn the spoken language. That's All Folks...
