We, the Legal American workers of the USA, need to stand together NOW, to keep English as our only native language.
Foreigners are saturating the USA & are slowly trying to modify our national language to include Spanish, so it will be easier for them to live & work in this country.
Qualified US citizens who need to support their families are being refused employment in their own country because they don't speak Spanish. This is happening on a daily basis. The unemployment rate is up and the government offices are making suggestions that we learn Spanish so we can get jobs.
This is wrong & something needs to be done. If we do nothing, in 10 years we will all need to know Spanish and have to push 2 to hear it in English! Please help stop the madness before it goes any farther.
We can not allow any modification of our national language.
We need stronger laws which require resident & citizen applicants to learn English in order to live & work in the USA. If not, than these companies that deal with non speaking English patrons, need to hire an interpreter and pay them what the average interpreter makes. To force the “legal” US citizen to speak a new language is Discrimination based on language.
We need new laws created to protect the English speaking citizens of the USA from any discrimination (like employment, housing, etc.)
Amnesty should only be given if the parties are willing to learn English and help change their family members coming over or who are already here.
Petition to NOT modify our native language to include any foreign language
Petition for stronger laws requiring all residents & citizens to learn & speak English in order to live & work in the USA.
Petition for new laws protecting US citizens who are refused employment in the USA simply because they do not speak a foreign language.
Petition for new laws protecting the English speaking citizens of the USA from any form of discrimination (employment, housing, etc.).
We would like to thank Verizon Wireless for taking the first steps in realizing that we shouldn’t have to push one for English, it should be a given.
If you agree, take a stand & sign the petition.

Times have certainly changed. English is my mother tongue, but I also speak Spanish and French. Back in 1982, I interviewed for a sales position with the Xerox office in Las Vegas, Nevada. The district manager asked me if I had any special skills. "Yes," I replied. "I speak Spanish." His jaw dropped. Utterly dumbfounded, he asked me, "Well, what good is that?" The job went to an acquaintance of mine who spoke only English. Hey, District Manager, good luck with the Spanish courses which you are now required to take. And congratulations on your foresight, gabacho!

And that has...what....to do with speaking English? I believe the whole point of this discussion is that to succeed in a country one should become fluent in that country's language. I graduated from high school in Japan (Air Force dad) and learned the language. That country should not have to put up Japanese/English signs, etc. to accomodate us. I am vehemently against being forced to learn someone else's language in my own country. I am sick of TexMex/English signs everywhere in San Antonio! After teaching here for 32 years I can assure all on this post that learning English is the furthest thing from a TexMex speaker's mind...because the mexican doesn't have to.

I find it interesting that everytime a discussion about language comes up, the Native Americans jump right in trying to play the "We were here first" card. Can you speak any Native tongue fluently? If so, perhaps you could tell me where I could take courses and learn one of the dialects? I would really like to.

You learned Japanese in Japan because they HAVE AN OFFICIAL LANGUAGE. But United States DOESN'T. Why can't you get that through your head? English is NOT native to United States...it comes from ENGLAND!!! United States has no original language because it's full of immigrants from ALL OVER THE GLOBE. The only reason why English is the majority language is because British Slave Owners spoke English and forced their slaves to only speak English as well. And Britain no longer owns this land so there isn't a steady flow of English speakers coming from England. BUT we do have a neighboring country called Mexico and it keeps United States supplied with Spanish speaking citizens. And to the North, we have Canada with French speaking citizens.
UNITED STATES HAS NO NATIVE TONGUE!!! WELL, NOT SINCE WE KILLED OFF THE NATIVE AMERICANS. Those poor people.

People like Wendy and this guy are doing this country a great disservice by keeping diversity out. But, then again it just stems from fear on their part. Well, fear, sloth and a touch of ignorance.

Hell, even I can give the landscaper instructions in spanish and I don't mind a bit.... BFD. Puedo hablar espanol a veces quando necessiario. Wendy, you are too young to be such a negative person. Lighten up and enjoy life.
You are right I am in my fifties and remember when going to school in south Texas we had a selective course in French what were these people thinking, Spanish is the way to go. The actual native language comes from the indians.

I have not read all the posts so this might have been covered.

I am currently having this discussion with a coworker of mine. He became very angry when, for the hundreth or so time, he was asked by a company if he would like to here the information in spanish. He believes that by law everyone who legally lives in America should speak english. I also noticed that one of the biggest concerns on this page is that employers are discriminating against none spanish speaking applicants. The problem with that rational is that even if the government forced us all to LEARN a certain language, it doesn't mean we will have to SPEAK it. Now I said that to say this. A company can "discriminate" for all kinds of reasons. There are actually only a few things they can't hold against you such as your race, sex, religion, and so on. If I own a buisiness and I feel that there are a lot of spanish speaking patrons in my service area, then even if they are required to LEARN enlish, it just makes good buisiness sense to offer my service in spanish. Which is well within the rights of the company.

I don't think whether or not english should be our national language should even be a discussion, however I don't think a company expecting a person to speak other languges is discrimination. For instance in the military, if I spoke arabic, I would recieve a bonus in my pay. If I really wanted that bonus I would go and learn arabic. I think the same thing applies to the job that requires you to speak a foriegn language. If you really want the job, you'll learn spanish.

I would also like to cover some of the other topics such as illegal immigrants and the, for lack of a better word, hatred that has been displayed here.

We absolutley cannot continue to allow illegal immigrants to not only come to America but protest for softer laws concerning immigration. But I can promise you this from experience, there are people in the world who hate us all. This hatred is universal to all people who live in america not just "english speaking citzens". I think we should ask ourselves if we can't have a civilized discussion concerning our differences of oppinion because of a language barrier without losing our tempers, how far are we from strapping C-4 to ourselves and setting it off in a public area because of differences in religion? I am glad to see Americans exercising their right to have an oppinion, I only ask you to remember that this country was founded on the concept that all people have that same right. This is also something that is not exclusive to Americans.

I am sure that I have mispelled some words and misplaced a comma or so. Please do not respond to this with anything stupid like making fun of my grammar.

I feel that your comment is really uncalled for. For one, I am Mexican and I probably speak and write better English than you do. When I was young, I knew only Spanish and had to learn English from the basics on. And guess what ... I did! I don't think I am dumb by any means; unless you call dumb having degrees in Computer Information Systems, English, and Business Administration, plus holding five teaching certifications.

And what is this "free" deal? If you mean free being the fact that my husband and I, who is a federal agent and Mexican American, pay over $12,000 of taxes each year while at the same time trying to put two daughters through college without any type of financial assistance, free--then I guess we know that word--NOT!

Free is the word well-known to those few lazy Americans that refuse to work for minimum wage due to their lack of education; an education that is available pretty much to every American rich or poor. They'd rather put in claims for food stamps, welfare, and WIC while the Mexicans who can't claim these benefits work day and night illegally for the Americans which I'm sure don't wince at paying them $3 an hour.

Before you start bad mouthing the Mexicans find out what they are all about. It is unfortunate that they come from a country that doesn't care about their people and that they have to risk their lives in search of making enough money to survive and help out the families they leave behind. It is really a sad situation but I'm sure your ignorance toward the subject has led to your misconception of these people.

Hold Up Alexandra,

I agree with you on most of the ideas you have except for 2 things, First of all, dont explain mexicans as victims, if they were victims they would not be coming here in droves, they are far from being victims. And 2, when that mexican woman has her baby here on U. S. soil, they become entitled or that baby I should say becomes entitled to all the WELFARE America has to offer.

PS, go down to home depot and offer a Nacionale 3 bucks an hour do work, he will tell you to "chinga su madre" quicker than shit through a goose!

But let me add something else that I noticed here in my travels, what most of us see here in the borders states is way different than what I have seen in the plains, interesting to see the Amish culture dealing with immigration issues in rural Indiana. I saw soo many mexicans I thought I was back in San Antonio.
