Everyone who has a job, in any profession, probably knew somebody to help them get that job. Quit complaining Magoffin & be happy for those who put their time in to get through college because I bet that half the people on topix don't have a college degree. Jealousy is a sad thing and it is destroying my home county. Glad I moved away. Rodney Whitaker didn't have a College Degree in Teaching! Wouldn't you like to have a teaching job, without a college degree in teaching, and paid more, than a Certified teacher? I sure would! I know that there were people out there, with teaching Degrees, waiting for a job, when Whitaker was hired, by Joe Hunley! That is unbelievable, that someone could get away with that, in America!

well wrote: so are you people saying if your family got in a power position you would not take advantage of it cant everyone just be happy for people, that is what is wrong with the world today. I doubt it impacts the world however, the political shenanigans may explain why Magoffin is at the top in state unemployment and poverty. The same names continue to be regurgitated, yet county growth and improvement remains stagnant. Look up the definition of insanity.

jim booth put his son in laws in positions of leadership and he is one of the most successful men in ky. mr. holbrook has made a smart move with mr. oliver. being a math teacher will serve him well with the finances of the food service. the difference between mr booth and mr holbrook is simply politics. those on the loosing side are always the "nay sayers" and hope for failure so they can say i told you so. instead of saying all these negative things what about saying what can i do to help, what about doing it this way it may work better.i've known mr holbrook a long time and he seems to always have been a fair man. mr holbrook is the superintendant for 4 years lets support him and magoffin county schools.

Like I said, family or not, Mr Holbrook would not have hired Mr. Oliver, unless he was Qualified, to do the job! Let's all support our new Superintendent! Look at the former Superintendent, Joe Hunley, lol! Thank God for Mr. Holbrook!

Has anyone considered peer review. That is how we hire people here in Boston. If a nurse or anyone applies for a job they have to go through their peers. It's us who decide if the candidate is qualified. It works well and is quite fair.

When so much energy is wasted on indecisions and hard feelings in the ranks, performance has to be deminished to a degree. Thank you Trippy for the suggestion, but status quo here is the regular main stay, I'm not looking for it to get better.(I wasn't going to post any more on this thread, but when someone who lives so far away and still interested and so willing to make suggestions for the good of our school system, I thought it proper that someone here take time to say 'thanks for the concern').

Never give up though. if more of us banned together to shape these forums up we could get some stuff accomplished. I am also on a forum from where I went to college and I am seeing a trend... Gossip, mean people slandering each other. I thought that as Americans we were suppose to defend each other and get along? Isn't there enough war in this world? Why do people on these forums continue to hurt each other? Sorry for my rant but I'm just a person that wants to see growth in our communities and for people to be kind to each other. I thought being a member of topix I would learn about local issues and debates but it seems to be the same here in Boston as it is there. But I won't stop trying to encourage better topics to be discussed on topix. Take care

Margie Adkins was the former Food Service Director for the last several years and did an excellent job, without an assistant, I might add, and with a salary of probably half of what the Oliver guy will get. She worked long and hard in a little cramped up office, and did a great job with what she had to work with. She left the food service with plenty of money in the BLACK I just wonder how long till that disappears. I hope the new guy will be a success, and anyone deserves a chance, so let's see how he works out. As far as Stanley Holbrook goes, he is the first good man, with a brain, we have had as a Superintendent since Herald Whitaker. So, lets all get behind him and pull our schools back up. We can overcome the "list of Nothings" we have had for Superintendents if everyone will support Stanley and treat him like he deserves. He will work hard, won't steal, and actually cares about our kids, teachers, citizens, and county. Not just about stuffing his bank account or bedding someone;s wife.

Wonder if any other person was even considered for the job? See, that's why our school system, and town in general, are in the shape they are! Why can't you attract strong people into education? Because they know that in Magoffin County, it doesn't matter how hard they work, how much education they attain, the amount of training they receive....the will NEVER advance unless they have some kind of political pull or family connection! And judging from most of the comments that have been made on this thread, most of the people in Salyerville see nothing wrong with this!

You must me either stupid or young or both. I remember Mr. Whitaker coming into the classroom in the 70's watching the teacher's teach. So you are for sure BOTH!!!!
