Blue Ribbon Downs closing

I can't believe that no one has commented on Blue Ribbon Downs' pending closing! KOTV reported that the Choctaws are closing the doors for good on Novemeber 28, 2009. They also reported that the Choctaws have offered jobs to all the employees there, of course they will have to transfer to Durant! Hope they all emjoy the 5 hour round trip commute everyday!

It's hard to believe that with such little options Sequoyah County has for entertainment that someone is not clever enough to come up witha money making entertainment idea for this property! It seems perfect for som many things!

The city and the county got together and they are turning it into and naming the place, "The Swingers Liquor and Beer Joint."
Since no one in Sallisaw has bought a liquor license, the city and the county has to do something to make the liquor by the drink look good. Of course, we the taxpayers will have to be the ones to fund "The Swingers Liquor and Beer Joint."
With this opening up maybe there will be less "swinging" going on at City Hall and the Courthouse.

I was there this evening and the casino was like a ghost town compared what a regular Friday night usually is. Not to mention that the workers looked pretty glum. Now I know why.

I am happy that eyesore skidrow looking place is closing its doors. Now I guess the city will let those old buildings just keep rotting to the ground. What a trashy rundown looking piece of junk. I say Good Riddance.

I figured some idiot would comment here. This is a shame that this piece of history is coming to an end and that so many are losing jobs! If the choctaws had put the effort and resources into this property that they have their others it could have been a success!

I laughed so hard at Judy Martens statement I wet my pants. I guess she thinks she is being a real professional. They say ignorance is bliss and I guess it is in Sallisaw.
I gather from her statement, people are asking her where she is from. The people are probably wanting to know where a country bumpkin hick like her came from. She is insinuating that Sallisaw is a resort and tourism place. If one would call a slum city like Sallisaw a resort and tourism city, one would have to have marbles for brains.

I, for one, can totally believe that they are going belly up! They treat their employees like subhumans if their last name isn't Philpot or if they are not "bowing on their knees" to the management! And I don't mean in prayer, although I'm sure pats on the head certainly apply while they are down there. Then you have the ones who "consider it an honor to work for....blah, blah, blah," and they have their head so far up managements ass you can't tell where one ends and the other begins! When they screw up their job so bad that they should be fired, their ass kissing and kneeling sure pays off because the bosses just call in another pee-on nobody to fix the knob slobber or ass kissers mess. Employees accumulate but aren't allowed to use vacation time and God forbid you need to use your sick time!!!! Yet certain leaders can take a week or so off because they are soooo sick but not too sick to take a cruise on their motorcycle in shorts! But remember, they had the right last name so they were "entitled". Come October, if you have more than 80 hours of vacation, THEY TAKE IT!!!! I don't mean buy it out, I mean flat out steal it from you. Anyone who thinks this lack of employee appreciation doesn't trickle down to affect customer service is an idiot. I would rather take a bullet in the head than to give these sorry excuse for employers my money. I actually took my child out to see the camel race the other day and we went inside the building that was damn near empty to sit because it was cold outside and one of the Gomer Pyle wannabees actually came up and told us we had to leave because we didn't have a reservation! There wasn't more than 30 people in the whole entire building and we couldn't sit in there. Nevermind that we had planned on eating lunch there which meant we would be SPENDING MONEY, DUH! So I told him "we were just leaving" and we did. This was one of the few times I have been there and can say that it was my last even before I knew they were closing. So, it is no surprise at all. My only hope is the hard working, unappreciated workers can find better paying jobs because they all have families to support. I would almost bet that unemployment will pay them at least their wages and If I were them, I would draw every penny AND let the state retrain me for a better job on the Choctaws dime! It's called WIA! Check into it.....you've earned it!

I think it is funny the choctaws blame lack of patron participation for the closing. Maybe if they knew how to run the establishment it wouldn't have gone belly up. I know they made money on the casino because they never had any payouts. As far as the OTW they never had enough people working there, you had to stand in line to make a bet and when you got up there it was too late so you just missed out. Most of the time in the summer they didn't have air conditioning in the casino so it would be like 100 degrees in there. Well if i am gonna lose my money I would rather be cool when i did it. The machines didn't take tickets so you spent more time standing in line than actually playing slots which was good for the customers, but bad for the casino.

Ok, so no matter what some of you may think of Sallisaw or the people who live there, can we please remember that there are about 200 people who are out of a job? People who have worked at Blue Ribbon Downs long before Choctaw Nation took over and have seen what it once was and what it has become. Somewhere along the line in this forum, people decided that it was more important to talk about how they think people from Sallisaw are rednecks and that this town in basically nothing. Well you know what? People need a job! I do believe that Choctaw Nation ran it into the ground. I do believe that if their "best efforts" should have included things as simple as advertisement. If you don't like Sallisaw or people from Sallisaw, FINE!! We don't care! So keep ranting and raving about how we're ignorant and sallisaw is a hole in the ground. But please do me one favor and get your head out of your ass, and remember that people are without a job!!!

I am proud to live in Sallisaw. I have a college degree and own a home. I pay taxes here and my children have received an excellent education here.
I make my living at Blue Ribbon Downs and I am sad to see this historical establishment and the horse racing industry in Oklahoma take such a shot.The Choctaws have never tried to make a go of the track. You can't be in this industry and not sell beer. This is the only track in the USA that doesn't have beer. As for the lady that didn't want to pay for a seat in the club house, there are plenty of free seats in the bleachers. Why should you sit in the club house for free when others have paid for the privledge? I paid for my table on the day the ostriches and camels ran just like the other 200 people in the club house. I ate there too. I don't think I should have a free ride so why should you? I am a race fan and some of the best raceing quarter horses in the country run a BRD. I will miss them. I will travel and pay for the privledge of watching them at Will Rogers and Remmington Park.
