To Pastor Don Emerson of Union Baptist Church How dare you imply that President Lincoln was assassinated because of alcohol consumption??? Please grow up and stop misinforming the citizens of Russell County.

On December 22, 1996, I was among the many emergency officials who were called to the tragic accident where Jack Shaffer literally ran over a family, killing all but one inside. The primary reason 5 innocent people died is because of a drunk driver. The crime scene was one of the most horrendous thing this community has ever seen. Most of you have no clue what it's like to remove a mangled body from a wreckage, the face of horror forever etched on a deceased as if they saw their death coming. You've never experienced the anguish encountered when telling a mom and dad their son or daughter is dead from a car crash, worse yet when the offender is intoxicated. I am for freedom and democracy but when you drink and drive, you jeopardize the lives of everyone you pass on the road. When you go to the poles to vote, think about the senseless acts of murder that could be created when a drunk gets behind a wheel. For everyone who votes yes, you are accountable for lives lost, property destroyed and homes wrecked when people are killed by intoxicated drivers. This has nothing to do with The Bible, God, Jesus or church members, this is about the safety of every person on the highways.

If what's his name had been at a restaurant with food and drink he would not have reached the level of intoxication he had. But no! he had to go to a wet county buy a quart of liquour or from a bootlegger in Russell and drink it all. What a stupid argrument. Get real!

The same alcohol that flowed through Mr. Shaffer's veins is the same kind alcohol that your restaurants will be serving. I'll ask you a question, and I want your honest answer, suppose the vote passes and alcohol is served according to the law. What if, during the course of a meal, the patron consumes enough alcohol to be a risk for driving? After leaving the business, what if he makes one driving infarction that results in an accident which takes the life of the one dearest to you? You gonna stand up and promote alcohol?

Give me a break, the alcohol consumed was in a DRY COUNTY so I guess your argument doesn't exactly hold up about dry liquor laws keeping everybody SAFE in Russell county ! Bad accidents happened with the look of horror on innocent crash victims faces too when Firestone Tires were found to blow out causing SUV roll-over accidents , but they still sell Ford Explorers and Firestone Tires !

A lawyer wanna be could tear your statement apart. It doesn't matter if the the alcohol was consumed in a dry county, wet county or moist county, the end result was the same. If a person chooses to drink, after one sip, they should be prohibited from driving. Ya know what, I guarantee if you had to walk in my shoes that awful night, your song would be different, your heart would be changed and never would you be promoting alcohol. Basically, you are not only unlearned but you have no common sense, no reasoning, or the mental intellect to distinguish good from bad, right from wrong or make any rational decision. You really just kind of .... well .... exist is the best way to put it.

(2) Can you name one instance of someone who wanted to get a drink that didn't get it because this is a dry county?

There is no necessity to risk one life by offering an establishment that sells it. Of course, there's no way to monitor what if's, but in the course of business, I'm certain there will be intoxicated drivers who exit the establishments. When I say intoxicated, I don't mean they have to be stumbling drunk since in some cases only a little impairs. 2. No. I cannot. I see where you are coming from. Why make it easier on someone to get alcohol? If a person wants to drink and stay home, that's their business. If they want to drink and drive, that should be EVERYONE'S concern regardless of where it's obtained.

All that horrible incident proved is that things like that happen in a dry county as well. A drinker can get booze anytime of the day or night they want. He was probably driving drunk cause he had to go all the way to Big Johns or the bootleggers to get more. Wet, dry or moist, people are still gonna drink and drive, sad to say. The closer it is, the less time they'll be on the road. People are gonna do what they're gonna do! If it was legal kids couldn't buy it and the police could monitor drivers leaving places that serve like they do the V.F.W.! It's a war we'll never win, but we could cut down on the casualties.

I would rather his being monitored at a restaurant than be at his home or a party where everybody is drunk and no one to control his consumption or notify authorities should he or she be out of control. I dare say few or no people can be documented leaving the moist restaurants under or in the condition you mention. What's his name, I understand left a country store dog drunk on his own bootlegged whiskey.
