Lisa Jackson, head of the EPA has ordered a number of coal fired power plants to shut down on September 1st. They all have cancelled their coal contracts and are using up their stockpiles. Obama has said he's going to destroy coal fired power plants, or to quote him, "You can build a coal fired power plant but we're going to make it so expensive, you will go bankrupt".

Coal ... While you are at it would you please tell us how long these clean air rules have been in effect & exactly why these certain coal fired plants are shutting down?

It hurts our state. Even if a mine operates well within the regs and does everything right they can't sell their coal if it's unusable. I would bet that your attitude was a bit different when you were mining.

You guys blaming all the wrong people for all the wrong reasons -- the record needs to be set STRAIGHT -- so I ask COAL to do that for us -- I did mine coal & enjoyed it knew it had ups & downs I had other trades & professions to fall back on in lean times, but I didn't realize till later in my life how damn destructive coal & it's operators could be.

Bug Ridge wrote: Coal ... While you are at it would you please tell us how long these clean air rules have been in effect & exactly why these certain coal fired plants are shutting down? First off, I'm retired and college educated. I have worked on union and non-union jobs so I know both sides of the picure. I was around in the 1950's and saw the streams run black and in Montgomery, stand on 3rd Avenue and could not see the college across the street and rail road tracks because of smoke from Alloy Plant. I have been past Glascow power plant when there were two smoke stacks belching huge colums of smoke and much later when scrubbers were installed and both units using the same smoke stack where only a small wisp of white smoke or steam was coming from the stack. I remember driving along the Kanawha from Belle to Nitro and the air choked you with a foul smell. All this is gone now, along with thousands of jobs that went to other countries rather than meet that day's environmental standards knowing they would constantly be made more stringent and difficult and expensive to adhere to. Ever hear of the law of dimishing returns where it takes more and more resources to achieve smaller and smaller results. It's time to quit bitching about the air and water around us, take a good look at the picture and see where and if we can make things better rather than making ridiculous regulations and destroying peoples standard of living. I've also inspected at least two of the coal fired plants being shut down and they do a darn good job. They can't match gas fired plants and were never designed to do so but still they get 99.9%+ of the solids from the air and thats quite good. The wind stirs up more particulate matter than the coal fired plants put out and I don't see anyone doing anything about the wind. Maybe we should require everyone to put a particulate matter trap in their yard, mix the collected material with cement powder+water and bury it. This is the same nutty way of thinking by tree huggers. Humans, every day, put some nasty stuff, in the form of liquid, gas and solid waste, in the environment every day by just living. WE don't need the "NANNY STATE" controlling every aspect of our lives and if it isn't reined in will, destroy our government. I can see a civil war in the near future if we don't take back control of our government by peaceful means Have a little water on you land and drain it and the EPA will destroy you for draining a wet land. Do you know the only wood you can burn is untreated wood. How long do you think the EPA is going to allow you to burn wood or coal for heat. Not long, you can be sure. The National Highway Traffic Safety Adminstration has achieved over 95% of the goals they set out to achieve and yet, they continue to expand and suck in more more money and enact more un-needed regulations. The Department of Energy was established under Jimmy Carter and has done nothing except suck up billions of taxpayer dollars and issue stupid regualtions. I could go on but what's the use. When you argue with a fool, then he's doing the same thing.
