The headline in the June 3 paper was inaccurate. Gilson was arrested for possession, not dealing. His prior arrest at the high school was for trafficking. The Ruidoso News regrets the error and will print a correction June 5.

Interesting how there is no mention of the authority by which police gained the right to conduct the search of the persons.

I was so discusted when I saw the hugh picture of Gavin Gilson in your paper. What concerned me was the other two people mentioned, Kayla Hunt & Kane Brock, were there also, where are their pictures? If you are going to possibly ruin a young person's life with these types of pictures, then why not print the other two pictures also. If these are dangerous criminals, then I want to know what the other two look like so I can be on the lookout for them.
I was hoping the Ruidoso News was not part of the "drive-by" media, but I guess you are not an unbiased newspaper. I was planning on getting a subscription to your newspaper, but if you are going to be this biased, then forget it.
Did the policeman have a part in the way you pinpointed Mr. Gilson?

I would like to see a picture of the person selling these kids the drugs. We never see that in the Ruidoso News. It must be because the Ruidoso Police Department is so horrilbe they can only catch the kids, or maybe they are in on the drug take.

Before I would print a story like this I would make sure the facts are correct. The headline is your attention getter and that is the biggest mistake and misinformation about the whole story. By the way wasn't the Criminal Trespassing Warrent droped in Judge Butts Court even before the origional Trespass story came out on your paper seems to me that the writer is a buddy with the school resource office Corkey and other in the force there are two sides to every story get it right.

Let's not blame the kid that broke the law! Let's blame the newspaper for putting his picture in the paper. You idiots are prpbably the peopl doing the drugs with him. the only comment that even resembles a sane thought is that we never seem to catch the people selling the Gavin's of ruidoso the drugs. But of course Gavin willprotect their identity to keep up his street cred. BS

I was worried the enablers would ride to the rescue. I think he needs to sit in jail long enough to be seriously inconvenienced by it. A loving parent can be a bad thing.
P.S. that collect call from jail with a crying kid on the other end is not the bottom most parents pray for, it's just another round of help me clean up this mess so I can create another one.

Figures the correction is done in small print on page 3a. Why not on the front page in big bold print. Once again Ruidoso News quick to cast the stones but not willing to assume and correct their mistakes. what happen to all the investigative reporters with integrety and willing to do the right thing. Remember you still need to correct the error on the Criminal Tresspass Warrent that Officer Corkey issued and Judge Butts Dropped. Do the Right Thing.

Remember you still need to correct the error on the Criminal Tresspass Warrent that Officer Corkey issued and Judge Butts Dropped. Do the Right Thing. All corrections or clarifications are printed on The Community Page. That's just standard procedure. A "correction" is not front-page news. I will make this clear to you: That is assuming responsibility for, and correcting, our mistake. As for the trespass charge, if that was dropped, we will get the paperwork from the court and print that. As far as news value goes, that was not the most serious charge stemming from the high school incident.

One other thing about the trespass charge. Unlike people who might be close to the case through a friendship or relationship and thus know about a court decision right away, the newspaper has to wait for the documents to become available. There is a lag time.

This is not a case of investigative reporting. It was a simple headline mistake – has nothing whatsoever to do with reporting. The story itself is dead-on accurate. And regardless of the headline, it is front-page news.

Dear Editor;
On the Ruidoso News blog, there is a string entitled "A Message for Sam" which contains much inuendo about wrongdoings in the Capitan Village hall.
As you are a resident of Capitan, it would seem that you would do some investigative reporting regarding these allegations.
Or, are the one or two "bloggers" posting this stuff just blowing hot air?
Sure, you don't take responsibilty for comments posted to the RN blog, but as these people are your friends and acquantances, you as a professional have a responsibilty to report the news or inform your readers that their is no truth to the allegations.

We deserve Better There are numerous accusations in the blogs, some connected, some not. The Ruidoso News, ever since Hammons was elected three years ago, has run a number of stories regarding the police chief situation, voting irregularities, the cell tower, the right to speak at meetings, etc. That's why we're having these discussions. It is not the newspaper's job – nor do we have the time – to snoop around trying to legitimize or dismiss every comment flying back and forth on the blogs. It's an impossible task. If and when there is an official action taken against the actors in these dramas, such as an arrest or lawsuit, we will be there to investigate and report. The bottom line is, when the proper agencies do their job, we are duty-bound to let you know.
