Waldoboro selectmen face request to use A.D. Gray for doormat enterprise

WALDOBORO : Penny Johnston has asked the Waldoboro Board of Selectmen to rent space to her in the vacant A.D. Gray school building to store lobster rope and to train weavers to make doormats from the old floating rope that lobstermen are exchanging for new sinking line.

"There are no other options in this town," Johnston said. "The town needs to get behind economic development."

But there is plenty of space in Waldoboro to rent for storage and retail. People can get busy and do their own economic development. Taxpayers have plenty of roads to fix, schools to run and fires to put out and we should not let ourselves be guilted into subsidizing private business.
