Roseville artist prepares for jail after refusing to alter mural

Full story: Detroit Free Press

Artist Ed Stross is preparing himself for jail -- a punishment he considers lighter than removing a critical part of his mural, as the state Supreme Court ordered last month.

The Roseville city council must be filled with a bunch of idiots. I've been reading about the battle between them and the artist for years now. This latest one over the word "Love" is absolutely asinine. Your tax dollars hard at work.

The guy is an obnoxious flake. I've watched him at quite a few council meetings acting like a total clown. He may be an ok artist, but keep it inside, his "art" is not good enough to be on the side of a building, at a busy intersection. He can paint all he wants INSIDE, I don't have to be forced to look at it every time I drive by.

Nancy, You obviously are not into art. There are alot of people who have a tremendous amount of channeled talent, that come accross as 'flakes' or 'obnoxious'.

His paintings are inspiring and are full of love, peace and harmony. It's much better than having the local gangs put their 'art' on that wall! No one is 'forcing' you to look at it; blink once and you'll miss it or God forbid, look the other way!

Roseville is a GREAT town!

Sorry, you're wrong. I have quite a few pieces are artwork, one being a Chagall. These paintings on the side of his building are in no way "art" They are simple drawings that any young teenager could do. His "cartoons" along with his stupid antics at the council meetings, along with Mr. Loser Goldwater, only enforce my belief that he is a laughable clown not to be taken seriously.

He, along with the losers with no jobs that hang out outside his building, make the place look tacky and run down. He can paint his "art" as much as he wants, INSIDE his studio, if anyone wants to see it, they can come in, we should not have it thrown in our face everytime we drive by.

Throw his a$$ in jail and let him rot. When bubba comes over and asks him for A date he'll decide real quick to erase the $hit he calls art and quit wasting the city's time and money.

Bubba will not be in the jail they throw him in if he goes. Bubba resides in the state penitentiary for felonious violations with other hardcore criminals who do a very long time. The artist would end up in a county jail or minimal security depending on length of time, but never the big house.

Also, the artist is not wasting the city's time nor money. The city choose to do that by pursuing him because they have very little else in their lives and need to pick on trivial issues such as a single word.

I suppose you would rather see graffiti on the walls than the works of a talented artist.

Hey foe, usually I agree with your comments, but have you seen the outside of this building? And you still think this is the work of a talented artist? Have you seen this "talented" artist play a fool at the city council meetings?

Nancy, yes, I have seen his work and I can't believe you wouldn't consider it art. Therefore, have you seen his work? His tributes to Princess Diana, Mother Theresa, Charles Shultz and more along with a small recaptured scene of the Sistine Chapel, I consider to be very artistic and talented. Do you think you can paint such picturesque displays? I know I can't. My best accomplishment is stick figures and anything beyond that requires a decent amount of talent.

As for the mentality of Ed, yes, he may be a bit off the wall, but what artist isn't? Celebrities are nuts, musicians are nuts and artists are nuts, in most cases. Many of them believe they are more than mere mortals. Regardless, it doesn't omit his talent as a painter and artist.

If you want to view him as a fool, nutcase, crazy, etc. person, I won't argue, but to allow that mentality to oppose his talent is biased. You don't have to like the person, but you can still appreciate the art.

IMO, the city of Roseville has something out for him and is making mountains from molehills. I could somewhat understand the issue with the exposed breast of Eve, since this screwed up society puts such a taboo on nudity, but his other artwork has yet to cause major issues.

Sorry, I just don't think it's good enough to be on the outside of a building at a major intersection of the city. On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give him a five. Sure, he can draw better than me, lots of people can, but again, my opinion is, it's not good enough to be on the outside of a building....let him display his stuff inside, if people want to see it....go on in.

It's no different than any other billboard, advertisement or mural of Barry Sanders or Steve Yzerman on a tall building. If you must eliminate one, then be fair and eliminate all.

Hold on tight the fruitcake train is leaving the station. I have met this clown and seen his abominations. He has no talent and all he wants is attention. Funny how you can't go around calling yourself a plumber if you don't know which end of a wrench to hold but any posturing, strutting, simpleton with a brush can call himself an artist. Am I supposed to be impressed because he wears an absurd hat and plays the victim for attention? Going with my gut reaction my first thought when I saw his splatterings was Jesus who painted that crap. Give him a one way ticket to San Fran. of course he won't go because he would just be one of a thousand nut job "artists" out there.....in short my dog has created better art with her bowel movements.

I used to support the guy, but his unwillingness to come to any sort of a compromise at all baffles me. I think Ed just likes to make a stink and get noticed.

Nancy is correct. His "art" looks like the stuff that is painted on velvet sold at Gibraltar. I wonder if I could get a classy Elvis tribute painted up.

His art is better than looking at gang graffiti! You all need to judge yourselves!

It's not better than NOTHING. That building could be a simple brick building and look fine. His cartoon drawings immediately bring the whole corner down to a very tacky level. That building should have NOTHING painted on it.

I'm sure many coming out of church on Sunday across the street wish they didn't have to look at his crap, or the jobless rift raft sitting out front.

I drive past his art work and think it looks beautiful. It is less grotesque than the bill boards with 1/2 naked teenage(looking) girls on them.
