Off Duty Police Officer Hits Man On Bicycle

An elderly man is recovering this afternoon after he was hit by a motorcyclist driven by an off-duty motorcycle.

The elderly man was riding his bicycle at the time of the accident. Officials say the off-duty officer was on his way to work riding along Pacific Street in Rocklin when the man turned in front of him.

The 79-year-old bicyclist suffered minor head injuries and was treated at the scene.

He's expected to make a full recovery. The motorcylist is a police officer for the city of Elk Grove. Read more

Minor injuries?!?! I passed this scene shortly after it happened and saw a mangled bicycle and a ton of blood all over the road. Are they playing it down because it was a police officer that hit him? The road is still stained with blood!

I saw the aftermath too.Anyone who thinks that the police would report this accident honestly when one of their own is involved is naive. It didn't look like minor injuries to me either.I wonder if the did a drug screen on the officer? They would have on you or me if we had been involved.

I was driving by this scene shortly after the elderly gentleman was taken away to the hospital. There were at least 15 police officers and 6 or 7 cruisers parked in the area. When I came back the other direction one hour later, there may have been even more officers and the scene was flagged with numbered evidence flags. Given the size of the response and investigation, I had surmised that a death was involved.
