Breast milk for sale

How in the wide, wide world of sports is Breast Milk allowed to be sold in a supermarket? Which governing body stamps its approval? Maybe I am old fashioned, but doesn't the FDA need to stamp its approval on this?

I'll buy some for myself.

Hmm, maybe move to Wisconsin and start a new kind of "milk" farm.

The breast milk isn't sold in super markets. Hospitals buy it.(The reference to Trader Joe's was about food in the woman's own freezer.)

i personally think this is a wonderful idea. babies do better on breast milk. it's healthier for them and more nutritious that formula.

It's sad, Fred, when you say you're old fashioned, but want government oversight.

I thought "old fashioned" would indicate less government.

this is just plain weird. are they going to screen milk for anything? what if they miss something like wheat or dairy? or something worse?

My first child was a preemie at 25 weeks. I pumped like a madwoman for 3.5 months while I waited for him to come home. By the time he was settled in, he was used to the bottle -- but at least it was full of breastmilk. I pumped for 2 years to make sure he would have the full benefits. During that time, I had lots of problems getting enough out. I had to resort to ordering a special medication from Canada to make sure I could make enough.

Now we have a second son who was born full term. He turned out to be a lazy eater, so I'm pumping again. This time, I had loads of extra milk and also hated to see it go to waste (I refuse to work on the supply and demand model for fear I'll end up struggling like last time). I found a public milkbank and have been donating 100ozs a week for the last 4 months. We chose it because it offers the milk at a resonable cost to those who need it, rather than trying to make a profit off it. All that milk donated for free only to fetch the big-wigs big money per ounce. Somehow I don't think it was meant to work that way...

It makes me feel good that my son and I can help others who were in my situation only a few years ago. And all it takes is a little extra effort. As my oldest says, "That's good milk for the sick babies."

I think it's wrong to profit on this. Though, I am glad there are opportunities to donate breast milk. When I was looking to donate my extra stash, I couldn't find anyplace that would take it.

Why is it a problem to make money on it? Cuz they are women???
I hope they become millionaires.

Instead of making money, why not donate it to the organization that sends the breast milk to Africa's starving babies?

My mistake that Breast Milk was sold in super markets. Still, doesn't it need some oversight if it is given away in hospitals? Otherwise, why hasn't something like this been done before? Are these twin women the first of all time who thought about giving away their Breast Milk? And, I'll stay old fashioned, and John R. can drink your Breast Milkshake if you want.

It's wrong (in my opinion) for the same reason that selling blood is wrong (again, in my opinion). It has nothing to do with them being women. If you were going to give someone your kidney, would you make them pay you for it?

I'm all for helping feed sick or needy kids, so kuddos to them.

But, um, did anyone else notice the part about breast feeding each others kids? Is it just me, or is that kind of screwy?

When you donate blood to the Red Cross, they then sell it (by the way, all donations to the Red Cross are KEPT by the Red Cross. They are reimbursed by the government for everything they give). Many women do not want to breast feed for other reasons (keeping their boobs perky is one). Let people sell their milk to them and the child gets the benefit.

No, but why would I give away a kidney? Cuz I have an extra? No thanks. Breast milk is renewable. Totally different scenario. And there are alternatives to breast milk. There are none for kidneys, outside of dialysis. The price for kidneys would be too high for most folks anyway...We charge for doctors' services and drugs. Why must women not profit from their own bodies?? Same thing goes for prostitution, BTW...
