What would happen if all of the foreign companies that invest in the U.S. in ways that creat jobs decided to keep "their jobs" in their respective countries? Thirty-thousand Toyota employees to name just a few would be out of luck. It might be useful to remember that every coin has two sides.

Protectionism may protect *some* jobs in the US - but only at the expense of others. By making Americans as a whole less well off, you destroy jobs - or earnings - elsewhere in the economy.

Buy or borrow any economics primer, and look up 'comparative advantage' in the index.

One of the easiest industries to keep jobs in the US is by vacationing in America. US vacations are a bargain compared to Mexico, the Caribbean, and Europe. Yet, year after year people have gone to those countries just so they could brag to their friends how much their vacation cost.

There are great vacation destinations all over the US, from Palm Springs, California the sunniest city in the US, to great midwestern and east coast cities. There is lots to see and do in America. And there is still beautiful wilderness to see.

Also, when you vacation, you should stay at independent hotels and eat at local restaurants. Support American businesses. Everytime you stay at a big corporate chain hotel or eat at a chain restaurant, you make it all the harder for small businesses to thrive in the US.

By vacationing in America and staying at and eating at independent businesses, every American can help our economy.

Exactly. I don't know why some people are too thick-skulled to understand this.

Yes every coin should have two sides to make a fair toss. However, when the coin toss shows balance of payment deficits the US incurs, the coin toss was neither free or fair to unemployed Americans or their kids when it comes time for them to find a job skill.

Daily Horoscope for December 24

Leo

Perhaps it's the fact that it's Christmas Eve and everyone is busy, but you can't help feeling that you're walking on eggshells around certain people. Their emotions are very close to the surface and could erupt at a moment's notice, perhaps in a storm of tears or a fit of pique. Calm them down and ask if you can do anything to help.
