My son Jarred was the latest victim of the sandbar We have only been in Vidor 4 years and did not know the dangers of the sandbar If we had my children would never have been allowed to go there The parks officer told us that it is safe that the kids panicked and thats why my son who was a good swimmer died Well I stood on the banks for hours while they dragged and watch the current swirl safe I dont think so If they wont close it they should at least put up clear warning signs about undertoes and currents I pray no one else will have to endure the loss as we have.

I agree they need to put up signs and not to let anyone under 18 swim in that place. One year I was swimming down there and I felt the current and literally was doing all I could to get back to shore. I'm an adult an experienced swimmer. Most of the drownings have been kids. Something need to be done about this.

Hey,

One, its a river, the neches river, not a lake you idiots.

Two, if the parents payed attention to what their kids are doing, they would not drown to begin with.

Three, if the kid was not a dumb ass, and not try to swim across the river (think about it, big river, ugly swift moving water, under tow! Duh!!!) they would be fine.

I have been going to lake view since I was a small kid, and so did my parents.

sorry to hear of your lost but to all of you locals out there no matter what they do people of all ages will go and do what they want to do there are to many boat ramp on top of that its part of the bigthicket it's a state park and there r sign up already where not to swim and to just all the redneck go around ripping them up and now u can't read them. and a sign is just for shifting legal liability of land owner(state of texas)to the offender you the trespasser to stop deaths the parks&wildlife needs to do more patrols not if like they anything better to do with hunting season open right now maybe you need to take a cpr class and swimming rescue class and patrol the river yourself (warning!!! patrol and rescue at your own risk)<-legal liability shift.its on you now.myself i would leave it up to the pro's now iam a bit off course.with common sence the river can be a safe place to play&swim just respect the river !!!!

okay here is the deal with the sand bar i not only live on the sand bar i have pulled people from it i am a firefighter here in vidor. the us parks and wildlife owns the park they will not close it you can forget it ant going to happen this is a strong part of the river and the under tow is what gets the victim there is a reason the locals don't swim at the sand bar so enjoy the beach don't swim also on the signs the Vidor fighters Assoc. has made phone calls to the local and to Washington DC with not much luck they say people don't want it cause it messes up the view we will keep trying to have the signs installed lastly never swim alone there and don't fight the undertow let it spit you out.

Here is the other point on this: even if there was a great big billboard sign at the sandbar telling of the dangers of swimming there, people would STILL swim there. It is a beautiful, peacefull, and inviting place that seems to draw you to it. The first time I waded in, I felt the pull or tug of the river and was aware of its strength. I felt frighten and yet challenged also. It is a place where many have challenged nature against their own strength. Some have won and some have lost. I believe that there are probly many other places along that river you would still have that danger. It is carelessness and pride that causes the drownings at this place. You would have to forbid swimming on the whole length of the river if you want to stop drownings in the Neches River for those currents are all the way down the length of that river that flows to the Gulf of Mexico.

So, what are the correct stats on this ?

However, a single life lost should be enough to warrant action ...

What kind of action? It's a River! It has a current and if you decide to swim in it you take the risk. Children should be with their parents and parents should be WATCHING THE CHILDREN! People who party and decide to go swimming in a dangerous place take the risk of drowning. COMMON SENSE. I'm sorry but the drownings at this location have all been with most of the people knowing of the history of the place. BIG BROTHER can not protect us all the time and some times we need to us our own heads and THINK!! I happen to love the sandbar and have visited it often. My son and his friends have been there many times. They are aware of the situation with the sandbar, and if something should have happen to him I would have simply ruled it carelessness on his part.

People are rescued everyday, throughout the world, from their own stupidity. Maybe you can recall such time in your life where you had to be bailed out by someone else. Can society afford to just shrug it's shoulders at human lives lost, or are we our brothers' keepers ?

Yes but like a child learning to ride a bike there comes a time when you have to let go and let them discover for themselves what they can and can not do on their bike. We cannot be a keeper to everyone every minute of the day. People have to use their own judgement in deciding their course of action. We cannot hold their hands forever. Please do you wish that we make the world baby proof?

I prefer to look out for my neighbor & their children, as I would like them to look out for mine. If not, we are not a society anymore, but a bunch of selfish individuals living in close proximity to each other ...

Yes I agree you do have to look out for our neighbors, friends and family But we can not make a perfect world where all people are going to abide and follow the rules. People are all free thinkers and are for most part going to do what they want. They chose the path and they take it. With every path there is consequences. Should we change laws and or make laws because some decide not to us common sense? I have been to that waterholding a many of times and so have others, we had no problem with the place. So why should we be denied the priveleged of enjoying this site?
