The City of Rome has the highest taxes in the local area. Not Clinton. Not New Hartford. Home values are also much lower than these places I mentioned. Consider also that the outer district still pays a high rate of tax and gets ZERO services.
I bet if you compared Rome to other, similar cities without union employees it would become apparent very quickly as to why the taxes are so high here.

They want so much for what they do. Look at all unions and you will see that the average yearly salary is close to, or over, what their non-union counterparts make. Most of them have little to no higher education that would make them worthy of such salaries. I worked union once for a year. I had to leave because I couldn't stand the constant wining they did. Nothing was ever good enough. During the automakers bailout we heard about assembly line workers with only GEDs and HS diplomas making $60,000 annually with crazy health bennies. I'd bet the auto engineer with the Bachelor's degree making $90,000 per year (average) is pretty pissed about that. My wife works for state gov making $47,000 with an Associate's. She has several employees who, because of their union contract, are making $56,000 per year with zero education. I praise Gov. Christie for putting Jersey unions in their place. He told them, "Look, there is no money for what you want. Take what I offer you or I will yank the union contract altogether and hire outside!" Good for him!

The workflow around here seems to be: don't go to college, get into the union because your buddy or family member is "in", get paid more than you are worth, complain and go on strike when things don't go your way. Feel entitled as if you job is given by birthright. Fight for your salary and benefits by using thug tactics because you know, deep down inside, that you have zero marketable skills. Then realize you can always fall back on being one of the local hackjob contractors by screwing old ladies over for home improvement projects. Get rehired by another union. Repeat.

That won't happen in NY until the legislature reforms the Taylor Law which is scheduled to happen precisely two days AFTER Hell freezes over.

It's not whether they know what they are doing or not. Rome City Hall has had corrupt mayors and counsel members for the past 50-60 years. The corruption just gets passed from one mayor to the next.

He's in the union's face and tells it like it is. Most people who hate him do so only because he won't give in to their whining about stuff. I do wish he'd lose weight, though. He's a heart attack waiting to happen.

You got a first class low life as Mayor. He lives like a pig and his rental properties are worse. He was at the Savoy for lunch and proceeded to eat six slices of bread. He acts like an animal. There is no hope. That's what got elected by the pond scum he registered to vote this year.
