Readers rage over pros, cons of high-paying city jobs

It's not easy being well loved. "After reading your article on homosexuals I can only pray that your soul will not attend hell upon your death," wrote L. Wilson of Hawthorne.

Mr. Bogert,
How many legal ways can you be attacked? I know of 4 ways that a police officer can be attacked. Any of the attacks ( yes attacks ) can and will have an impact on his/her ability to earn a living and provide for his/her family or wipe out any retirement money that has been saved. In this day and age, it is easy to question and raise doubt of any action or inaction taken
or not taken by a police officer at the scene of a event that can and will change lives. Our expectation of a police officer is that he/she will do no wrong and always agree with our way
of thinking. If there is trouble happening, if there is a threat to your life, if there is the guy across the street who plays his music to loud in the middle of the night and won't let you sleep, if, if, if, if , if real problem you don't want to deal with who do you and most everyone else calls for 24 hrs. a day, 7 days a week. Who is only human and not as perfect as we expect, who do we call. john.bogert, no I don't think so. We call the people who risk their life, limb and yes ability to earn a living, the police. What is a police officers life worth? You tell me. For many years, various news papers publishes what a house wife/ mother/ care giver, is worth. If the various articles are correct, what is a police officer who is a wife/ mother and care giver worth? What is your opinion?
Have you heard the saying " a penny for your thoughts?" If this was true, isn't an opinion a person's thoughts. Does that meant, your pay should be only a penny? Mr. Bogert, what is your pay? Are you over paid?

Bogert works at the pleasure of his private company. If they don't like his work or the company faces hard times, Bogert is on the street. Period.

City employees however, work at the pleasure of the union and civil service laws. If their work is sub-standard, they continue on. If the city faces hard times, they continue on.

It wasn't that long ago that we had firemen feeding each other dog food -- and then suing for more money. Are these the brave souls that earn every penny? Did the guy serving the dog food get fired? Did the fool supervisors get fired?

No, the union protected them all. And the dog food eater got millions and a retirement few can hope for.

Enough is enough. Its time to break the union and return these salaries/benefits to levels that taxpayers can support.

Whenever 'public employees' want to justify their salaries and benefits, they all seem to become police officers and firemen. Never do they want to compare other jobs (office clerks, civil engineers, custodians, etc)with their direct civilian counterparts. Why?

If these comments by city workers aren't additonal proof of their disdain for the citizens who pay the taxes that finance their unbridled union greed, along with the facts presented in the Daily News story, then private citizens who are too lazy and uninformed to take action against them deserve all of the tax increases that these slugs have in store for us. City employees sound like a bunch of whining, spoiled brats. They should be ashamed of themselves.

Things are really screwed up. Public employees and politicians are supposed to be working for the taxpayer. These thug unions have managed to turn it around and make the taxpayer hostage to them.
