Unwilling sacrifice

Even as plans move forward to demolish homes and businesses for a new "span" school on a busy commercial block in the heart of Wilmington, many area residents remain staunchly opposed to the project.

wow, is hahn actually doing something good/productive/right for once? she's right. there are tons of hard-working people in wilmas mixed in with all the knuckleheads. it will be sad to see the effect two-fold: on the proprietors and the residents that rely on them.

it's like LA officials dont even want to give wilmas a fighting chance.

Why not sacrifice some of the businesses on Broad Ave. south of Anaheim? Or one of the empty lots between Harry Bridges and C St.? Total lack of foresight on LAUSD's part. Serving themselves, not the public at large.

Unfortunately- this is a win/loose situation.
Hahn stated, "Unfortunately, the site is currently home to a number of prosperous businesses in Wilmington, of which there are already too few," This is not true. Look around....you have markets, dollar stores, hair/nail shops, eateries on every block of the city. The city did not need Northgate Market- it's too overpriced and dirty.

I have an idea ... how about sending the "Anchor Babies" and their parents back to their countries of origin. That would reduce the overcrowding in the existing schools.

Why is the LAUSD wasting money attempting to educate kids who will end up dropping out of school anyway? The money should be spent on kids who value education. The money should be spent on kids who will grow up to contribute to society. The money should NOT be spent on kids who will end up shooting eachother and/or dropping out of school. What a waste!!!

How do you know that the kids from Wilmington don't value education and won't grow up to contribute to society? Just because the majority are Hispanics/Latinos does not mean that they don't value education and can't contribute. Also, just because many parents from other countries don't have an education level above middle school does not mean their children will do the same. FYI, my mom was a high school drop-out due to becoming pregnant with me but later got her GED. And guess what, I didn't drop out of high school. I graduated 3rd in my class and went to CSULB and graduated. So don't come and say that LAUSD is just wasting their money. Its because of people who think like you and stereotype based on their location is why these children grow up to act they way they do because that is what is "expected" of them.

I hope they find a solution that will benefit the community of Wilmington without having to sacrifice homes and businesses.

WHAT A HORRIBLE ATTITUDE YOU HAVE! SO WHAT COUNTRY ARE YOU AND YOUR PARENTS GOING BACK TO?
ARE YOU GOING TO STAND AT THE SCHOOL DOOR AND POINT OUT THOSE WHO WILL NOT "CONTRIBUTE TO SOCIETY, END UP SHOOTING EACH OTHER AND/OR DROPPING OUT OF SCHOOL" AND TELL THEM THEY CANNOT STUDY? I DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO MAKE YOU SUCH A NEGATIVE PERSON BUT I HOPE YOU GET SOME COUNSELING AND IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN THAT YOU NOT PASS DOWN YOUR IGNORANCE TO THEM. I FEEL SORRY FOR YOU.

I thought LAUSD had this incredible budget crisis?$12B over the next 4 years for new schools and renovations?

And, to deny the illegal immigration in the area would be foolish on everyone's part - no matter what side of the issue you are on.

I'm also curious to know how students are faring at Wilmington schools currently, even with the overcrowding. Until people pull their head out of the clouds and realize that family values and environment contribute more to education than a classroom, we are only going to see an increase of uneducated children and drop outs.

The proof - take the PV School District...you could stick 50 kids into one classroom and the kids would still do well. Most return home at night to an environment with parental supervision and educational values.

With all of that said, I do see a bit of picking on the little guy with this. Seems like LAUSD picked a location where they knew the public would be little informed or have little power, to stop them.

Why is LAUSD speding all this money to build new schools while our current ones languish? We have THIRTY YEAR OLD "temporary" classrooms. Take down the portables and put a real building there- it will upgrade the facility, increase seats and be cheaper to boot.

Stop being such a fool, even if that Northgate is dirty, how would you have known that it WAS going to be dirty? Did you see into the future or something? Thats a stupid reason to say "the city did not need northgate market", makes no sense......

It seems LAUSD cannot do anything correctly.

Maybe it is time to break up the overly huge district into districts that are more reflective of the geography and population that the many communities make up.

We have seen LAUSD crumble into the mess that it is in and not only with the current bond money, not fix their problems, any future bond money, foolishly approved by voters, will be as wasted as the current funds are.

It is time to wave the white flag, LAUSD. You grew too large to fight any fight.

When LAUSD loses, our kids lose and it is time to stop the madness, and end this.

Neither I, nor anyone else I know, can afford to keep this mess continuing.

Comment to Katie. That is the most racist view I have ever heard! Just because people do not have the "privelage" of being born into a wealthy family does not mean that they deserve to be treated in this manner.
I'll have you know that I am a Banning Graduate that recieved a Bachelors in Political Science from CSULB and I am currently attending USC to complete my Masters and this was all done while holding a fulltime job just so I can be the boss to dumb ignorant people like you. So tell me Katie what have you done? Are you sitting on your big behind stuffing your face while using up your daddy or your husbands money? Hmm? It is ignorant simple minded people such as yourself that are contributing more to the mess in this world. One thing about Hispanics that many people fail to recognize, they actually WORK!!!

LA Mayor Tony Villar stated recently on KFI 980 that LAUSD is in trouble. 1 out of 4 students drop out of school. Of those students, 1 out of 3 are hispanic. I would say that the statistics speak for themselves! I would also say that educating students who will inevitably drop out of school is a waste of money.

I also attended Banning and LB State, and working quite well. I spend hard-earned money into Wilmington and surrounding communities in supporting our businesses in this current failing economy.

Oh, and my mom and dad only made it to 3rd grade.

That said, I believe we should build the school around the old Don motel area. Revitalize downtown Wilmington, somewhat like Culver City shopping area and watch the money come in.

Wilmington is the way it is...because L.A. is too big and too spread out...

Katie stated her opinion that was based on the facts: 50 percent of today's ninth graders will not graduate across the variegated population that makes up the LAUSD. You, a university graduate, resorted to name calling, while Katie was polite while stating her case.
LAUSD high schools are "in the news" every few months for hundreds of students fighting at break time.
Hundreds of homes (and apartment buildings) and a few dozen small businesses have been torn down while the LAUSD has built 135 schools that the citizens of Los Angeles will be forced to pay for over the next thirty years.

How many are boys? And yes, it matters.

Our current educational system IS NOT fair to boys, nor is it best for how they learn.

Well let's see...where to begin.

STOP telling parents/kids these boys have ADD/ADHD and medicating them beginning in the 1st grade! Boys are more restless than girls, have more energy and in general need to move around more and not be confined to a seat for 6 hours a day.

STOP letting girls wear whatever the h.e.l.l. they want (i.e. scantily clad clothes) to school, where these poor boys are being bombarded with "sex" in an environment where they are supposed to LEARN...and then they are constantly told to suppress their own sexuality.

HIRE more men teachers, so these boys actually have men to ineract with, hopefully men who understand what it means to be a boy or young man.....and then perhaps can be a role model to them. Many of the boys in the failing schools have no father at home..and being around nothing but women all day long IS NOT healthy for them.

STOP holding boys to the same academic standard for girls, particularly in the area of language arts. In general, boys will NOT develop their social skills, writing and reading skills as fast as girls. Boys and their parents are told from a very early age they are falling behind...and then the extra homework, after school tutoring and summer school starts...poor kids. I'd be sick of school too by the 10th grade if I had it crammed down my throat like that.

START developing classes that are more appealing to boys. Stop making them dance and recite frickin poetry about "feelings".

CREATE all boy classes, if necessary, where the pressures of girls and what they look like, or how "stupid" a boy might feel if he speaks out and is wrong in front of a girl aren't there. This would help girls too!

STOP canceling boys programs (a direct result of Title IX!) These boys NEED their sports programs and NEED time to be just around BOYS...and there is NO reason why a program can't be developed just because it isn't available for girls. Yes, boys need it FAR more than girls and I couldn't care any less about disagreers.

Wake up PEOPLE! If girls were dropping out at the rate of boys, it would be considered the great school crisis since segregation and it would make the FRONT page of EVERY newspaper until someone stood up and did something about it!

My caveat - CLEARLY a strong family is paramount to a child's success in school - but these efforts would certainly help!
