My Thoughts
Knoxville, TN
|
Not in my lifetime I don't think. It is not Rogersville's answer to all their problems. Success does not come in a can or a bottle. I would bet we people that frequent on topix would tend to vote it in, but the true citizens/voters that go to the polls and vote will never let it happen. Just my thoughts.

I am for it. Bring it own. I am tired of all my church friends asking me to pick it up in morristown or Kingsport. I don't even drink but think it would help on the revenue and bring businesses to Rogersville. Look around ever county has liquor by the drink except us. That is why we have to drive 30 mins to eat good.

I would say that you're fighting the wrong battle here. Look at it this way. Right now, anywhere in the county, you can go to most any convenience or grocery store and pick up a six-pack of beer. A good percentage of those that do so will ride around and drink it so their significant other doesn't know how much they're drinking. There you go...drunk drivers. Now, when a restaurant charges $5,$6, or more for a drink, how many drinks are you really going to have? I'd say one, maybe two. But of that $5 drink, how much do you think is profit to the restaurant? Probably as much as $4. On a $5 item on the menu, how much is profit?$2? Probably less. So my thinking is that the profit from a drink is going to keep a lot of restaurants in business that aren't normally going to make it with low profit food items. And the likelihood of someone getting so drunk on high-dollar drinks that they can't drive is minimal at best. If you're going to compare drinks at a restaurant to drugs on the street, you're barking up the wrong tree.

This will definitely help bring in new resturaunts and tax revenue. Stop and think, it will be much safer... We now have people driving 30 miles either to Greeneville, Morristown, or Kingsport to get a drink and then drive 30 miles back home. Therefore our roads are more risky and dangerous and we don't see a dime of revenue. So I consider it a WIN - WIN - WIN... More revenue for the county, finally a good resturaunt, and roads safer...!

If there are truly more ways to generate revenue then let's hear it. Some of those commissioners have been on there for 20 years. If there were lots of other ways then someone isn't doing their job. At least if it's on the ballot then the people have a choice. If you're not interested in finding new ways to get revenue then don't complain when your taxes get raised. The money for roads, schools, law enforcement, etc has to come from somewhere. The state and fed will continue to put more pressure on local government to pay for things...so what are the choices. I think we have a few commissioners interested in what people have to say. So call them and share answers to difficult questions.

If they would control it but that can't be done way too many idiots who can't be an adult and drink like a grown up..see nothing wrong with a two drink limit...or even three,... But that would open a whole other legal problem... And then you have the other extreme do gooders who will say drinking even in moderation is evil... So no real compromise in sight

This time I believe Rogersville will except the legislation of liquor by the drink. We the citizens of Rogersville would love to not have to drive 30 miles to eat good food while paying more in property taxes. We want people to eat, drink and be merry in Rogersville while spending their money here.

It's time to come from the "pulpit of damnation" into reality.Anyone of the legal drinking age can stop at any convenient store and buy drinks with alcohol in it.Wal Mart and now several of the dollar store chains offers beer for retail sale. The point is that if ANYONE wants to get drunk then it's not that hard to find alcoholic beverages WITHOUT having to go to a restaurant to do it.Responsibility of each individual is the key note here, not limited choices.

Anyone else find irony in the fact that the business owner who is pushing the drink vote was recently arrested for DUI?

The best reason to vote no is if this passes we will lose the Hale Springs Inn. And what a sad day that would be.

According to the paper, the DUI and the failure to comply to the applied consent law were dropped. He was found guilty for carrying a gun by an intoxicated person. So he gets pulled over, they determine he's to drunk to carry a gun but he get's off the DUI charges. Can someone explain that to me?

I didn't even know that Hale Springs Inn depended on local prohibitions for its existence. If this establishment ceases to exist Rogersville will die immediately. The only thing that could possibly be worse would be if the Golden Dairy continued normal business BUT closed their dining room.

The penalties for serving someone inebriated or under age is very severe. State law regulates wine and liquor sells, not your county beer board. Regardless of control...people make their own decisions. I'm quite certain that even though a seat belt law exists there are still deaths that could have been avoided by wearing a seat belt. If you're afraid of getting hit by a drunk driver leaving a restaurant then I would advise not leaving your house. Beer contains alcohol which is served at and sold from many Hawkins County businesses. I heard this debated over the weekend one isle over from the beer isle at Walmart. If you shop at or purchase gas from any business that sells alcohol then you are an enabler. So if someone is strongly opposed then they should change their buying habits to reflect their convictions. It's a great debate and We The People should make the decision, just like we should have made the decision on the General Sessions Judge appointment.

Always has been, always will be. You can buy a beer at many restaurants in our county. You just can't buy a good glass of wine with your meal. This is just a ridiculous battle. The war against alcohol was lost years before most of us were born.
