The two workers killed on I-75 South near the Norris/Clinton exit have now been identified. Cheyenne Dakota Burke, 18 and of Bulls Gap was killed, as was Jeffrey Bryan Thompon, 19 and of Rogersville. The men were tightening cables on a guardrail when a pickup truck towing aluminum on a flatbed trailer hit them. Burke and Thompson were employed by Lu, Inc. of Kingston Springs, Tennessee. The Tennessee Highway Patrol said the truck started swerving, crossed into the median, and hit them. That truck's driver has now been identified as 50-year-old James Hatfield of Huntsville, Tennessee. The guardrail stopped the truck from crossing over to oncoming traffic. Southbound I-75 was completely closed and northbound was down to one lane. The interstate reopened about 4:00 Monday afternoon. Dispatchers got the 911 call around 10:45 a.m. Monday. Any charges in the incident depend on the outcome of the THP investigation. TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely has released a statement of sympathy for the workers' families:

what a pitiful story and loss of life so young. I knew Chey for many years. He had a sad life in his earlier years, but was such a sweet guy and had so much to look forward to. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, especially his brother- and all of his many young friends. Please take this to heart young friends of Chey- life is short and we are not promised tomorrow. Love your friends, family and count every moment as a precious priceless gift.

My deepest sympathies go to both of the families. I taught Chey, and can say this is definitely a tragedy. He was such a smart young man, and I'm sure he will be sorely missed. Chance, if you read this, know my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family!

My prayers go out to Chey and Jeffery's family and friends. I didn't know Jeffery, never met him, but I have no doubt that he was a wonderful young man. He graduated and had a job, and that in it's self says a lot about him. He surely will have family and friends that will miss him dearly and my heart and prayers goes out to them. Chey has been in our home several times. He was a very dear friend to our 18 year old grandson. Chey was the type that you just wanted him to make himself at home in your home. As one song goes, To know him was to love him. He spent the evening just last night at my daughters house, playing Wii with our grandson and another close friend. My daughter told me tonight that my 4 year old great granddaughter was to have a date with Shey tonight. He was going to take her to McD's. My 8 year old granddaughter said she won't have any fun now because Shey wasn't coming over anymore. He was like an uncle to these two little girls. They still have their family and friends, but they too, at such a young age, have lost, in their little eyes, their best friend. This will be hard on all family and friends of these two beloved you men. We will pray that the Lord will give each of them the strength they will need during this oh so sad time in their life. To my grandson DJ, sweetie, you have lost your best friend, but the two of you know that you will be together again one day because you both love the Lord and you and I know that ol' Shey is looking down on you and telling you he is fine and will be waiting for you. I love you so much.. My heart breaks for you honey, grandma is here you if you just want cry or laugh, remembering good times with Shey. If you just need to talk, I'm here. You Papa is here for you too hon. We live you. Shey, Mike and I will miss ya for now, but we too will see you again one day.

Jeffery was a great person. I still cant believe he's actually gone. But I know he's in a much better place. I'll miss seeing his smile. I know Jeffery is in Heaven now looking down on me. Thank God each day for what you have and take nothing for granted! I'll see him again someday! RIP Jeffery, I love you!

I'm not defending the truck driver but several years ago I could have been him. I was towing a trailer on the interstate and the load shifted about fifteen miles down the road. The Lord was with me that day as I started to swerve. I could not stop in time and wound up going in the median. As I was going around I looked back and all the traffic on the interstate had stopped. I finally got stopped and got out and prayed. God said it would rain on the good as well as the bad. In this case it would surely be the good as I can't think of a nicer boy than Chey. I will always love him and I'm sure Jeffrey was just as nice as he was. We never know what time God is going to require our lives.

Jeffery was such a great guy!! He had a sweet smile. He was respectful to my family, when he would come over.He was sunshine on a cloudy day. It is so sad to hear of this tragedy..his girlfriend Brashae has to devastated..and his little baby girl, Zoe.. was loved by her Daddy..We all need to pray for both of these families..It is so unfortunate that this had to happen.....

Both Chey, and Jeff graduated the same year as I did. They are both great young men. I am terribly upset by the unfortunate tragedy that happened yesterday. They both had such bright futures, and were both such nice men. To their Mom's, Dad's, Lauren, Brasha, Chance, and Jeff's little boy, I hope you all are doing okay. Please stay strong. You are in my prayers. Just remember, It's not all good, but it'll all be all right. I love you guys.
