As i sat listening to the pros and cons of this annexation request during the last bma meeting, I could not keep myself from gazing toward the "Excellence in Planning" award, recently received by the town of rogersville, and hanging in prominent view in the board room... Good luck to all.

Good luck to all. They really had an annexation request this time! From Doc Chambers. They said they did last year when they came after the Western Areas but never showed it and nobody ever came forward and asked at any meetings. It was all smoke and mirrors! I don't believe anyone really asked to be annexed. Even if they did, a referendum on the subject was and still is in order. Let's all find out what the will of the people involved turns out to be. If the BMA is offering such a good deal they should hve nothing to fear, annexation would pass in a landslide and the lawsuit could be put to rest! It is the American way of Democracy, and no one should argue against it!

I don't know....It seems like the people right outside the city limits do utilize a whole lot of city resources. Example...how many people who attended the 4th celebration came from those areas that are to be annexed?
How many use the city park?

We also support the city with our sales taxes from our shopping in town. Some County resourses are used for the Athletic programs using the park.

If paying some sort of access fee to the city for park use kept me from being annexed into the zoo known as Rogersville I would be the first in line to pay. I personally don't attend the 4th of July celebration. The concept of providing "free" activities is repulsive to me. I believe people should pay for it. Giving the kids free stuff gives them the wrong idea about life, they become use to getting stuff not because they worked for it but because they exist. Existence should not be the credit card for life.

MY2¢, I'm hoping and praying you never need someone to help you through a rough time, because if you never accept anything free it's going to be a long hard road.

A small access fee would be a lot better than a 50% insrease in our property tax for a lot of phony "services" that we dodn't need. Rogersville's record of providing those sevices is poor at best, not to mention overpriced.

Since we have a "Seen It All" and someone that can only offer "Two cents", I can truly say,"now I have heard it all!" You two are pathetic by reason of blowing off with no wind. And I have heard the wind blow before. But these attitudes are hilarious!!!! Your low opinion of the Fourth of July Celebration is unfounded because it sounds as though you can't stand the thought of people coming together to celebrate our great country. You would probably be bitching if they did charge! And furthermore this "free" event brings alot of revenue to the town on this day as well!(People purchasing at local businesses, food, fuel, etc.) And of course this keeps our taxes lower (in which you probably don't pay anyways). If you think we pay "high" taxes just un-recluse yourself's and crawl from your cave far enough to communicate (this means asking someone) about what the public pays (in taxes) in other parts of this country. After you find out what other people are paying, ask what type of services they are getting. Compare with a simliar size town and you'll see that a lot of towns does not offer half the services versus the current tax rate. Attention "My Two Cents" & "Seen It All": WARNING! The above activity takes effort! Exertion (slight labor) might be hazardous to your immeditate health. This temporary occupation may effect your welfare check!

Planning Commission meeting of July 24, 2007 canceled due to a lack of a quorum... I stayed around til about 6:45 PM and did not see anyone, except for about 10 citizens who came to exerecise their civic rights. I am curious as to who from the planning commission was present to determine a lack of a quorum... I find it hard to believe that all members decided not to attend without someone calling and informing them prior to the scheduled meeting that none would be held... I do realize that there are times when a quorum will not be present for a public meeting. But I feel that there should be some official present to determine that a quorum is not present at the posted time. Ah well, off my soapbox again. Til next time...

I attempted to go to that same meeting tonight. It would have been my first attendance at a Planning Commision meeting. My main purpose in attending was to see for myself some of that "Excellence in Planning" in action. Oh well, maybe next time they have a meeting, if they can manage to plan it so the Commissioners attend!

It is probably a good thing they didn't have a meeting. As I understand it, based on an article about last month's Planning Commission meeting and what the mayor said at this month's city meeting, a new state law says two members from outside the city must be added. To me, that means the current planning group is technically no longer "legal"...maybe someone was bright enough to figure that out.

Tim, the proper way to dismiss a board meeting when quorum is not present is for a member in attendance to make a motion to the chairman, or the person acting as chairman at that meeting, to dismiss due to lack of quorum. This requires a second and a vote. It is the only motion that can be entertained and the only vote that can be taken at a meeting without quorum present. Posting a note on the door is not sufficient. Thanks for letting us know what happened.
Additionally, of the two members from outside the City limits to be added to the committee---there is no question that you should be one of them. Your knowledge would be very valuable, and there likely is no one else in the whole county who has attended the meetings re our City business that you have. I would love to see them have the class to appoint you. However, if you slide right into the GOB network, that will be a crying shame.
